Can anyone tell me about this area? I am looking at staying at the Warren House apartments because they offer a cheap monthly rental. However, I dont know if that neighborhood is safe, etc. I will only be in Austin for a couple months and I havent had any luck with other short term properties. ANY help is appreciated.

In a past post on this forum, someone recommended a great search engine for crime locations in Austin (Austin Crime Map - Showing Crime in Austin, TX - Crime Statistics - Crime Alerts - Crime Stops Here). I use it all the time to check out prospective homes. I entered the street address of the Warren House Apartments and, frankly, it doesn't look good. Please check it out for yourself. Good luck!

Well, what are your expectations? I looked at their web site and they offer a very cheap monthly rate. I would not expect much from the apartment itself. Nearly all of the affordable, working-class, housing in that area is being torn down for luxury condos and apartments that will be built in their place. It is not generally an area full of UT students, those places are on the other side of Riverside. It is a Hispanic, working-class area right now.

It is a fairly safe neighborhood, definitely not a shooting gallery, but I imagine that area is pretty loud on Friday and Saturday nights. I wouldn't have a plasma TV or lots of high dollar electronic items around, I wouldn't set my computer right by a window where anyone passing in would see it. Crimes of opportunity definitely happen. But you are very very unlikely to be mugged in the area. If you are coming from a bigger city and consider yourself fairly street-smart, you'll be fine. If you have zero familiarity with working class folks or Hispanics, it might not be the place for you.

I lived off of E. Riverside for 10 years and I still live close by. I drive down south lakeshore drive nearly everyday. I feel safe in that neighborhood but it is not for everyone. You won't find anything else within 15 miles at that rental rate ($415 a month)

Maybe try Craiglist to pick up a sub-lease?
