Help
Hello all. My fiance and I are in the process of doing a job transfer within our company to southwest Austin. We are having a difficult time finding affordable housing, we are a young couple with a 4 yr old and a 5 mo old. Combined we make no more than about 40,000 a yr. I have been researching apartments online and am frustrated to find that most nice 3 bedroom apartments in good neighborhoods are 1000/mo and above. There has to be nice, affordable apartments SOMEWHERE in south Austin that do not exeed the 650-700.00 price range! Or am I asking too much? I live in a small town in Illinois, a three bedroom 1.5 bath in a good area and i only pay 575.00/mo, maybe I am just cheap, I don't know but I am really reconsidering my transfer. I have been looking into the Round Rock area, it seems nice. We are an interracial couple looking for an area that won't treat us as outcasts, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you are going to be working in SW Austin then you don't want to live in Round Rock, unless of course you enjoy traffic.
I'm sorry I can't help with specific apartments but $1,000 a month for three bedrooms sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Try the Bridgehead apartments at the 360 and the 2222. I'm not sure where in SW Austin you'll be working, but it would be a better commute than Round Rock. My MIL got a short term lease at these apartments for a 1Br for $650 or something, so I think if they have 3BRs available you'd be well within the $1000 max you are looking for. They're nothing fancy, but they are clean and the complex seems quiet and pretty well maintained. Good luck!

Apartments have to pay the state property tax, so that get passed on to the renter. Depending on where in SW Austin you will be working, you might consider Buda. Not many apartments, but there may be some reasonable houses for rent. Maybe not, though, I am not sure what rates are out there, but they SHOULD be less than Austin.
Anyone know the rates in Buda?

Maybe Kyle Too
Great advice Trainwreck. I don't know prices for Buda either, but deetee, I would suggest you look there and Kyle, TX too. You might find a house or an apartment for less in these locations than South Austin.
I'm not sure what sites you are using but be sure and check out statesman.com classifieds and craigslist.
Good luck!

Thanks guys, all of your suggestions are appreciated. I have also looked into San Leanna. Are any of you familiar with this town? As well as Manchaca. I will definately research Buda and Kyle. I have two small children so towns with great daycare options is a must! I have been searching with austinapartmentsearch.com.
