I tell people who say that.."There is no east or west RR, there is just RR". They can live east or west of I35..but there is only the one single entity called Round Rock.

speaking of perpetuation, that's how all the northern suburbs grew the way they did. The people moving there initially worked at Dell, Samsung, etc. They told people to move there as a knee-jerk recommendation whether it was appropriate for them or not. That's how most people end up living out there - "friend of a friend recommended it" and we ended up with bloated suburbs and half the Austin metro trying to squeeze onto a few arteries southbound into Austin. I'm not complaining, as this phenomena has benefitted free-thinkers who enjoy 20 minute commutes for the same price as a house in RR with an 1 hour+ commute.

agreed. I wish they would build some HUGE low income housing on the WEST side. I pray nightly for it. So tired of this East/West mentality. What a bunch of snobs.
Do you REALLY think your school is better or do you fully understand money talks? I hope it's the latter so at least you have some clarity.

An hour-ish. I've driven to Temple and it takes an hour, so Killeen is a little more North of that, but not much. You might shave more time off your commute looking in Georgetown as well.

Lake Forest and Forest Creek areas are very nice. But the other areas nearby are marginal.

I'm not sure one person can claim their fame to beginning stereotyping but hey, you never know. Also, I would really like to hear your definition of "marginal".

I believe it's a little over an hour. As the other poster said, Georgetown would be a bit closer - quite a few Fort Hood families live in Georgetown, especially if one spouse is at Fort Hood and another works in Austin.

Georgetown was ranked #45 for "best places to live" in the U.S. by Money magazine. Congrats, THL and all those that live there.
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/money...PL4829336.html
Round Rock also made the list, as did a surprising number of Tx cities..
This rating can become moot if you factor in commuting to Austin though.. because, yes...it's that bad.
If you factor an "A" quality of life with a "D-" commute, it becomes a wash.

No, really, it's not. There are quite a few alternative routes these days, and if you're not commuting to downtown (and, really, how many people actually work right downtown so have to commute there at rush hour?),and you're not insisting on taking IH35 (I rarely drive on it past Round Rock when I'm going to Austin, even South Austin), it's not that bad.
