I will agree MOST Californians are rude, obnoxious and demanding, BUT not all of them!!!! I am a native, and am not that, no matter how much or how little money i have had in my life!!! But i am not "typical" either.
The housing situation is sh***y to say the least, and we are in a very hard hit are of So. Cal....It will take YEARS to regain the amount people "thought" they made on their houses, IF it ever happens again...You think they are crappy now, wait til it gets worse. ther are a lot of crappy situations, but I am glad to have my husbadn and kids, yea we are affected by the lack of work, we are self employed, but am i going to take it out on the next person i see, NO, but a lot do...It is a sad situation, and sadly enough i think we will see it get worse way before it gets better.

I have lived everywhere except NE, but I have lived in Florida, so definitely know the attitude of 'some' in NE, not bad, different.
You will find nice people everywhere!
Some make a stigma that Texas is full of hospitable type personalities, for the most part is true, but remember we are in a transient place here in Austin, there are probably more people here from CA., then any other place, so you will get that percentage of the CA. vibe here, which is fake, pretentious, what kind of car do you drive type people.
So yes you are going to come across these type people living here, I think you will find it out here more in suburbia, which is flooded with people from CA. Unless they have lots of money and are in Eanes school district, so I have heard on here-lol....
Almost every other person I ask is from CA.
Not all CA. people fit in this stigma, there are nice people in CA. too, but, when you find that friend, who seems like a genuinely nice person and then another time they are fake due to the enviroment, you have found a CA. type friendship, the personality changes with there surroundings, silly high school type stuff, that you hope most have grown out of, because we are all equal really,
We all come together in tradgedy or life changing events, due to necessity.
WHY not just be who you are, in day to day life and believe in yourself, without keeping up with the JONES?
I hope the TX 'nice' (manners) stays around and more people come too realize this is a natural way to be, if you are confident!

I have only lived in Austin for a week now (yeah finally!) and have found people here friendlier than the people from where I come originally (SA). I just attribute it to the laid back, carefree attitude. I live not too far from Lake Travis and it's kinda hard to be grumpy when you live near that beauty.

We're seeing a huge influx of Missouri applicants for some reason. Does anyone know what's going on over there that's causing such a huge migration out of there and to Texas?

We just spent a week in Missouri on vacation at Lake of the Ozarks and I thought everyone we met up there was super nice, just as nice as Austinites.
As to why there may be some people leaving MO, some of the people I met at the vacation resort told me the economy in St. Louis is soft and they've had some big layoffs. I'm not sure what their main industries are there. Other than that, I don't know.
But I do know this, the property taxes in Missouri made me want to move there. You can get a drop dead knockout lake view, 1200 sqft lake front condo for $150K, with a boat slip, and the annual property taxes are $600. The insurance would be $225/yr, and I filled my tank before we left for $3.34 a gallon. All the restaurants we ate at were priced the same or cheaper than Austin. And the people were very nice. Looks to me like the Ozark Lake area of Missouri is going to become a retirement mecca for the first wave of baby boomers who get there before it becomes fully discovered.

That sounds awesome Steve. Let's all move there before everyone else does!

Retirement place for sure. It's hard to find good paying jobs in many areas of MO.
