Affordable supermarkets in Austin?
I am getting ready to relocate from Southern California to Austin, TX and I was wondering if there's such a thing as an affordable supermarket in Austin? Vones/Safeway, Albertsons, and Ralphs are expensive. Here in Southern California we have Stater Bros market which is so much more affordable than Vones/Safeway, Albertsons, or Ralphs.
Also, is something like Trader Joe's in Austin. I am sure that there's Henrys and Whole Foods, but again those places are expensive compared to Trader Joe's.

H.E.B. can be found at just about any major intersection and they have the best prices. Also check out Sun Harvest for reasonable prices on some great organic food.

HEB is much nicer than any Stater Bros I've been in. And the prices are just as good, far less than others in Austin. There is no Trader Joes in Austin (bummer). Whole Foods or Sun Harvest, but those aren't quite the same.

You know, on the Trader Joes issue, its website has a feature where you can put in a request for a location. It is growing rapidly and seems like Austin would be a great place for them to open a store since it would likely have a good customer base. Welcome to Trader Joe's - Your Neighborhood Grocery Store - Contact Us:Location Requests

Trader Joes is privately owned and they will NOT franchise so that could have been an issue (if I read your post correctly about your parents wanting to open one, I assumed that means they wanted to get a franchise). But I am not sure how shipping wine into texas would be an issue since other stores in TX bring it in. I guess it could be that if there are wine distributerships that have a monopoly in TX (meaning the company is forced to use that distributer instead of dealing directly with the vinters) it could get in the way of then bringing in certain wines. But it seems like there is so much more to TJs than wine now that it shouldn't deter them.

You should give Sun Harvest a chance. It's a Texas original (from San Antonio) has great prices and selection.

WHen my parents spoke with them, they were at a point, from what I understand, that TJ was thinking about allowing franchises... as for shipping in wine, it's something about coming from CA. When I was in corporate world, I was planning a huge party for my company, and many of the vendors were coming from CA and they wanted to ship in wine, and they had issues doing it. Not sure what the issues were, as I didn't pay attention, but they ended up having to order the wine from a local distributor to deliver it to us. *shrug*

There are two: one right off Anderson Lane, and the other isn't far from 360 on Lamar.
Has anyone out there been to both? I have been to the one off of Anderson and was wondering how it compares to the one on Lamar? Is the one on Lamar better?
