Default YIKES! We're moving and have nowhere to live... Temp housing suggestions?

Okay so I get the job offer today. YAY! So after the initial excitement, the planning begins. They want me to start asap, in 2 weeks. I was going to stay with my friend but she is hosting her in-laws from Galveston indefinitely now. I started looking at extended stay hotels but I really don't want to stay in a hotel that long. We're thinking that it'll take us about 45 days to close on the house once it's under contract -- and it's not under contract yet. Plus it needs work before we move in.

Where can I find info on short term rentals (apt or houses)? I've looked at craigslist and austinhomesearch until I was cross-eyed. I don't really see much in the 3 month range (and that would be ideal for us). Does anyone have any other suggestions?

The only other thing would be to get a 6 month lease and break it. I've never done that before so I don't know what's entailed with breaking a lease. Do you just pay an extra month of rent when you do that?

Thanks for any advice. I'm freaking a little here... both from excitement and stress!

I assume you are meaning that you are moving TO Austin and not FROM Austin.

If you are looking for a furnished place, do a search on "Corporate Housing Austin". It will come up with a number of companies that provide short term furnished housing for extended contracts and relocations. We were housed at The Preserve on Southwest Parkway for a while when we first came to Austin.

Is your new company assisting in the relocation? They may have a firm that the deal with on a regular basis.

Good luck

Call one of the UT Austin area property management companies to check for vacant condo rentals near UT. Any condo owner who is stuck with a vacant unit this time of year is up the creek now. They should be happy to get a short term client to rent trough the end of this semester or at least through the end of the year.

You should be able to get a decent rental rate, but you will probably have to put up with showings as they try to pre-lease the unit for next semester.

Otherwise, the corporate apartment route is your best bet, or a higher rent for 3 months at a regular apartment.

Steve

I stayed in a corporate apartment in Memphis for 2 months. It's the best way to go IMO. Iceshots is right. I just did a search on "Corporate Apartments Austin" and got lots of hits.

I'll be working downtown and our house we're trying to buy is in Granada Hills (off of 1826 and 290 near Oak Hill). We'd like to be close to Granada Hills...

Thanks! I'm SOOOOO excited. But I feel sick to my stomach at the same time. It's a lot to take in all at once. Be careful what you wish for, eh?

Also I'm really dreading the drive down with my daughter. There just is no easy way around that one.

I hear ya, ditto!!!!! Only now I dont think the job pays enough for me to live on in Round rock! but I am from Ohio and I cant take another cold winter of those freezing winds, brutal, along the great lakes here. I am torn about moving somewhere that I cannot afford, and no, the boss wont give a raise in salary, we dicussed that. Have you found anything? My cousin changed her mind and used the room i was staying in for her business. Great.
