Moving from Atlanta to Round Rock
We will be moving to the Round Rock area in January 2009. We are coming to the area in October to "look" around and get a feel of where things are. We want to rent an apartment for the first six months or so until we can learn the area and make a better decision on where we want to buy a house based on our needs. I would love to hear from people about their experiences in different apartments in the area to help us with our choices. We are looking for something with nice ammentities and a gated community that is relatively quiet. Is this out there? Also, what are the commutes like from Round Rock to Austin? Are there any areas that should be avoided because of safety issues, high crime, etc? I have also heard that there is one High School that should be avoided. Any ideas on which one that is? Thank you so much for any help.

I lived in Steeplechase Apartments on 79 East of 35 from June 06 to Feb 07... at the beginning it was very nice, clean, quiet, safe - RRPD was right next door. Now, new management, RRPD had moved, and I wouldn't live there again. Forgive me because I don't know the names but I'm sure people can/will help me out - the apartments on the NW corner of AW Grimes and the Toll Road are supposed to be nice and quiet - right next to dell if that's a plus. The apartments on Old Settlers (3406) west of Sunrise are supposed to be pretty good for a little less money. Other than that - I can't think of many other nicer complexes that haven't become a little worn down. There are some new ones around Teravista that might be open when you get here. There are new luxary apartments on the NE corner of 79 and 1460 that just opened but are SUPER pricey (in my mind, $1500 for a 2/2 I think?, I paid $700 just last year) and the location is semi-crappy/tough to get out of.
I live in Chandler Creek in NE RR (1460 and 3406) and love it - super safe, quiet, etc, great entry level home for my wife and I. I would assume of the two high schools actually in RR, Stony Point would probably be considered worse than RRHS because of reputation, but I would have no problem sending my kids to Stony Point... it's no worse than any other typical suburban HS. The 4 RRISD HS's (McNeil and Westwood are in NW Austin technically) are all pretty decent - each one slightly different, but all decent, if not just downright good. I'm sure others will come in and disagree with me, but I say that as an outsider who moved to the area recently and have no direct ties to one school over another.
RR to Austin commutes vary on the time of day - 20-25 minutes to Downtown without traffic, 40-60 minutes in rush hour typically. I personally haven't done the rush hour drive in a while but my brother-in-law lives with us and commutes to UT 6 days a week so those times are based from him.

We moved and rented a nice house instead for $1400. 2000 sq feet, garage, backyard, 3 bedrooms. This could be an option to.
However, if you are looking for nice NEW apartments, friend of ours live in the ones off Well Branch Parkway and the 145. All the units (to my knowledge) have granite in the kitchens and bathrooms, an island in the kitchen, and the layout is pretty good. The place has a security gate and the amenities seem pretty good too.
I can get the name of it if you really really want and a phone number too. Let me know.

Crazy people moving to Austin from Atlanta!?! LOL
You know that they have Post Apartments in Austin? And our kennel opened up a branch in Austin too.
Good luck with your move. We're finally moving after much research and waiting on a job offer. Glad to see the end of the traffic on 285 and 400.
