Exclamation Things to do in Austin (One day trip)

Dear all,
I am coming to Austin in this Sunday by road(I'll have my car). Could you please tell me some places/attractions that I should go for? Though one day trip is not enough but I want to cover as many places as I can within this time. What would be the best plan for a one day trip in Austin? Which places I shouldn't miss? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

What's the purpose of your trip? Do you just want to sightsee or are you scoping it out for other reasons? Are you a history buff or do you prefer nature? Tell us more!

Thank you so much Moonlady for your prompt reply. Actually one of my friend is going there for a one day visit. He wanted me to join with him. Then I've decided to go with him. We are going there just for a visit. We don't have any other task to do except visiting the city.

History or nature? I like both of them but I prefer not to visit museums as it kills lots of time.

Thank you once again. I'm eagerly waiting for your reply.

I agree, Museums should be for when you have lots of time to kill.

OK, so here's a few landmarks/ places of interest:

1) The Capitol - it's really impressive and it's free. You can walk in and just take a quick look around or spend an hour or so and get more detail.

2) Mount Bonnell - beautiful view and a good way to exercise off a big meal of BBQ or Tex-Mex: Mount Bonnell Austin aka Mt. Bonnell Austin

3) The area just west of downtown to include Zilker Park and the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue. If so inclined, you can rent a canoe at Zilker and paddle the Colorado river.

4) UT area. A quick drive through is all you need, but be sure to drive down Guadalupe (otherwise known as The Drag).

5) A drive out to Lake Travis. Prettiest drive is to take 2222 all the way out to Hwy 620, go south and over the dam. If you want to get closer, take Hudson Bend Rd after the dam, or follow the signs to Hippie Hollow north of the dam.

Those are the things that come to mind, we'll see if anyone else chimes in.

Daytime:
Eat early lunch at Guerros on S. Congress, then stroll the shops on South Congress. (2 hours)
Walk around Town Lake. Park under S. 1st street. Take your picture at the SRV statue. Catch the Austin vibe. You have to get out of your car and walk to do this. (1 hour)
Swim at Barton Springs pool. More vibe. (1 hour)
Go to Mt. Bonell and take in the view of Lake Austin. (1 hour)
Grab a beer and shoot a game of pool at the Poodle Dog Lounge, one of the last real bars, with real smoke, in Texas. (1 hour)
Eat dinner at Artz Rib House - order the ribs with mashed potatos and coleslaw (1 hour)
Go lay down in your hotel and hold your stomach, rest up.

After 8PM:
Visit Broken Spoke (1 hour)
Head to the Continental club to hear some music (on South Congress)
Go the 6th Street (or 4th Street) for more music and wandering aimlessly. Leave before midnight.

After midnight:
Breakfast at Kirby Lane cafe

Steve

Good list Steve! The Old Pecan Street Festival is going on this weekend too. Since it's free admission, you can just stroll around for a bit and maybe catch some of the music acts. Old Pecan Street Festival
