Austin and Fayetteville (AR)
Has anyone experienced working and living in both cities? Besides the college football comparison, how else do they compare? They are on the top of my list for a 'quality of life' relocation. I was very impressed with my visit to Fayetteville and intend to visit Austin next week. My focus is on the outdoors and the coffee house rather than the club scene.
I know that there is a sizable student population but is there hope for a single 40-year old male to find a social life there?
(Will post this question on both the Arkansas and Austin forums).

Fayetteville is your best bet. It's similar to what Austin was like in the 70's. The Ozarks are beautiful like the hill country but greener & more mountainous. Northwest Arkansas has plenty of jobs.

Hmmmm. Therein lies my problem. Just spent a week in Fayetteville and really enjoyed it except that I thought it was too quiet. And I was there for a Hogs game and biker week! Dickson Street was fine at the weekend but everywhere else seemed dead. Wanted somewhere to hang out at nights with a bit of life during the work week, but couldn't find anything except Starbucks and that place wasn't exactly hopping with excitement.

I am in Austin at the moment. I believe that all the places on my 'to do/ to see' are done. Went to the Oasis on Lake Travis this morning and the scenery was spectacular. Have 3 more days (of 7 days) to find stuff to do.
There was a murder the other night in Austin, which brings the tally to 19 for the year so far. I guess that is one big difference between Fayetteville and Austin. (I understand that there is a sizable size difference). Was not impressed with 6th Street (being hassled in the Street) but the Warehouse district is impressive.

Just curious, what sort of "hassling" did you experience on 6th? Was it panhandlers, rude people, or police? I'm also curious what else was on your to-do list, especially if you are looking for last-minute ideas that you haven't already done...

The hassling was from aggressive panhandlers and people trying to sell me drugs, so I intend to skip 6th Street for the rest of my trip. Did not have those problems in the Warehouse district.
As far as what I've done so far:
Bats on Congress Bridge (Very cool)
6th Street
Warehouse District
Farmers Market in Republic Square
Whole Foods area
The Drag
Mount Bonnell
Lake Travis and The Oasis
Georgetown area and Downtown Roundrock
Zilker Park (The Springs etc)
Lake Austin
South Congress
Went to the main shopping areas: Arboretum, Highland Mall, Barton Creek and Lakeline. (Not very impressed). The Round Rock Premium Outlet place wasn't bad.
Cannot remember the other places at the moment.
Intend to go to the Capital Building and the LBJ Library in the coming days.
I really enjoy the coffee house scene in Austin. There is a great selection.
And, the drivers in Austin are as advertised .... lunatics (for the most part).

Panhandlers are pretty common there. Sorry to hear about the drug dealers. The main homeless shelter, and police headquarters, are both right near east 6th street. West 6th is a little different -- older crowd, no drug dealers.. places like Opal Devine's, Z-Tejas, Katz', Elephant room, etc: Austin's West Sixth Street Guide on Austin Citysearch
Sounds like you've done a lot already. You might check out the Alamo Drafthouse, Paramount Theater / Long Center (if there is anything going on), Salt Lick and/or the Mandola Winery in Driftwood... Rowing dock off Stratford Drive, rent a kayak and paddle around the river with all the slackers... The Triangle Area and the original Central Market... Go to FlipHappy crepes or one of the restaurants on Barton Springs Rd (if you didn't already when you went to Zilker)... rent a mountain bike from Bicycle sport shop and try the Barton Creek Greenbelt. At UT, besides the LBJ there is also the Blanton Art Museum and Harry Ransom museums, they are free and have some pretty amazing things in their collections. Like the Gutenberg bible, first photograph, watergate papers, etc.
