Sarovar on Burnet has a good buffet but even better dinner menu (try out the Chicken 65 if you like spicy food and also the vegetable korma).
If you want something quick and "homemade" indian style, try out Curry in a Hurry in Parmer. Its more like a fast food vegetarian place, but the quality is good and not as greasy as some restaurants.
If you want real indian food, I would avoid Clay Pit..They are expensive and the food is Americanized.

I used to work in North Austin and loved to go to Indian Palace on Far West and Taj Palace by Highland Mall. There used to be a Thai place called Bangkok Cuisine near 183 & Burnet that was good - it's now Thai Passion, and the menu had changed somewhat the last time I was there.

I don't work in that area anymore, and since I live South I don't have a good reason to head up that way. I haven't seen much of anything in the way of Indian or Thai food here in SW Austin.

I just heard about a thai restaurant in Del Valle - out 71 past the airport that is supposed to be the best in Austin. Little Thailand. I haven't tried it yet but am planning to. Has anyone gone there?

I like Sarovar, and I even like Clay Pit's Korma, but the rest of their stuff is pretty bad. Their buffet is so disgusting.

Default Update!

I have tried a new Thai place and it was actually pretty good! It is called Thai Spice and it is at 701 Capital of Texas Hwy. in a little shopping area. I recommend it!

The Thai restaurant in Del Valle (right under the water tower) is very good. The food is fresh and cooked well. The atmosphere is a little bleak but the people are very freindly. The place was packed with customers the night that we went there and it was mid week at 8:30pm so the crowd was a surprise and speaks well for the restaurants popularity.

Default Another foodie perspective

Indian Recommendation:-

Spicy, authentic, and real tandoor- North Indian:- Bombay bistro, May be Taj palace

Mild, Ambience and good drinks- North Indian:- Clay pit

Just vegeterian and south Indian:- Madras pavillion, may be chola

other than these guys i would not reccommend a single other Indian restaurant. Either they are filthy or they are fake. In indian food it is important to keep your origin alive, most of them try to cross borders without even understanding the authenticity of the dish. For the last time South Indian and North Indian are almost different cuisines. Chola is south Indian but he experiments on north indian stuff and doesn't really do good.

And now Thai
My knowledge in thai is less so i will just call the best ones:-

Ambience and great taste:- Thai spice- 360 loop

Good spice and taste:- Madam mam's and Thai village.

Thats it for me i tried another half a dozen but never liked any. Satay is an overrated faker. Remember in thai food you have to tell the spice level or else you will end up getting very bland food. Their starting level is edible by any body.

Finally any food thai or indian, if its done the right way it will taste good. Some one tells you its tastes weird because thats how its made, then he is lying.

Why am i writing so much, because owe these for keep my taste buds drowning
