I've been surprised at the number of O signs I've seen outside of central Austin. Highland Hills especially, and I was just in Great Hills today, Five to one for the dems, easily. But lots of republican signs in Northwest Hills and Westover Hills.

I live in deep blue territory and most houses that have signs have had them up since March.

Yes, Barton Hills/Zilker and Bouldin/Travis Heights are very blue, very vocal areas. My precinct went something like 70% for Nadar in 2000.

But I should also point out that Dems in Texas are not exactly the same creature as on the east coast. Plenty of Dems drive pick-ups, own guns, go to church, and eat bar-b-que, so you might be in for some culture shock regardless of the area's voting record.

It is kind of funny, but is seems if someone puts up a politcal sign, then one of their neighbors puts up a sign for the other party .

I have always wondered what the real purpose of the signs are....I suspect that the incumbent party is always at least a little 'on the out', and the challenging party supporters put their signs up more as a 'don't blame me' sign. It seems that there were a lot more W signs out after Clintons second term was ending....

Anyway, I am not sure signs tell you much about how liberal/conservative an area is, it might just be an indicator of how 'confronational' an area is instead .

As for recycling, the COA has a program that should be expanding this month (or so our little flyer says so).

jdinaustin is on a distinguished road
Where I live in South Austin you can still find affordable housing and all central Austin has a very liberal feel as long as you stay away from suburbs and beyond. The area is in 78745 just just south of Ben White Blvd real estate 10N, but north of Wm Cannon. You have to look around as the area varies widely block by block and it is rough in places, but for the kind of price you are looking for, you'll have that. The area is a hidden gem in that you are so close to everything, but so far you don't have to pay for it. The people that live there are Mexican Immigrants, Nice Old Retired People, or 25 to 40 years olds with new families. You are only 5 miles from downtown Austin, 8 miles to the airport, 1 mile from westgate shopping area, 2 miles from Brodie shopping area, and 3 to 4 miles to uber hip South Congress and South 1st areas. You can still get in here for under 200k for now. Similar places just a couple miles up the road go for 30% to 100% more in price. It's also nice as you can still have a decent yard. Hope this helps.

Signs in yards are a small step up on the stupidity scale from bumper stickers. Has anyone's vote ever been swayed by a yard sign?

NW Hills, running half and half. I'd rather see political signs than those big blow up holiday decor things.

Ah yes, the Bubba. The democratic equivalent of the red-state redneck. I had assumed they were becoming extinct; but I was definitely thinking about those types as I tried to figure out which area of town was the most liberal.

It's interesting to remember how the Bubbas used to live off South Congress, among the old hippies, druggies and prostitutes. It was one big, happy bunch. Then they got driven out by the hipsters and rising property values, and started dying off. Perhaps it was their trademark beer-bellies leading to heart disease, or the increased dominance of red-state Republican culture among rural, church-going gun owners... But for some reason, they've seemed to be near-extinction since Ann Richards left the governor's mansion. The few I know that still exist appear to be having sort of identity crisis -- some have given up the beat-up pickup/junk in front yard/lonestar beer lifestyle for the more culturally understood "old-austin-hippie" lifestyle of the beat-up compact car, overgrown (but no junk) lawn, and slightly more expensive locally brewed beer.

No! The Bubba is an endangered species? Can we get them on some sort of list for preservation?

Not fair! My kids love those big blow up things. At least ours is a monster on a bike - if you have to have one.

Does anyone remember the annual tug-o-war across Town Lake, with the South Austin 'Bubbas' on the south shore and the North Austin 'yuppies' on the other? Ahh, the good ol' days .

Interesting 'South Austin' article in the Chronicle some years back...http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrob...id=oid%3A81422
