Our pediatrician recommended FluMist. According to flumist.com, Walgreen is the only pharmacy that offers it in the area. We called Walgreen, explained our situation and were given the green flag. When we arrived later in the day, Walgreen had us fill out the paperwork then back-pedaled. First we were told we needed a prescription. (The doctor's office was closed by then). Then we were told our child was too young.

Apparently Walgreen has its own immunization criteria that differs from the state of Texas. We're still not clear what it is. Apparently the pharmacy personnel aren't either.

Our 5 year old granddaughter was so happy when told that she could get the Flumist rather than the dreaded shot. Then the nurse took one look at her allergy congested nose and said that it wouldn't work. At least the poor little kid got a Culver's frozen yogurt for enduring the brief instant of pain of the shot. I haven't told her yet that she will need a booster thirty days after the first injection.

Just FYI, if your children are in RRISD they are having a Flu Shot clinic coming up - and they are using flu mist.

A warning about flumist. If your child is on any immune surpressing drugs they shouldn't get the flumist because it is a live culture compared to the shot which is dead. I know it isn't common but I thought I should mention it.
