Make your own. I grow my own jalapeno and scotch bonnet peppers. A little olive oil, cilantro, a red onion and garlic makes some of my own salsa verde better than anything at the store. I'll share my receipe if you like.

I like this approach! We're on a waiting list for a community garden and I plan on growing Jalapenos, green chiles (if I can) and garlic.

As for Taco Cabana, every time I eat there I feel sick. Not sure what it is, but it seems disagreeable to me

Car957,
Can you share your recipe? I live in an apt so growing my own veggies is out of the question, but Im sure its stuff I can pick up from the market.
Thanks!

Sure:

4 Jalapenos
1 Scotch Bonnet jalbenero
1 Red Bell Pepper
1/2 pound of cilantro
1 garlic clove
1/2 of a red onion
Ground black pepper
1 can of Rotel tomatoes (I like the hot Rotels)
1 Can of Green Chilis
1 Lime and 1 Lemon

Essentially I just cut up everything, throw it in a food processor and add a little bit of olive oil. If has too much of a tomatoe taste, add a pinch of sugar.

Its best after it has been refrigerated for a day.

I spread mine on chicken fajitas. I found that HEB has precooked chicken fajita meat that's pretty darn good. Enjoy

Car957: do you mean the juice of a lemon and lime, or the whole things?

We loved, loved, loved Taco Cabana when we were down there. We ate there every week, it was great being able to have a margarita with my fast food meal!

Grasshopper

Just the juice. And it is either a single lemon or a single lime. I like it with lime myself but some other friends like it with lemon.

I contacted HEB customer service and their response was
Quote:
we are currently only carrying the La Victoria red mild hot sauce. We have this at 7 different locations in Austin and at our Round Rock #4 Plus store.
My recommendation is to visit one of their stores, find a can of the LaVic hot sauce and take it to a manager asking they also carry the taco sauce. When they see something from the same brand it "breaks the ice" a little and makes it easier to add other product.

I love Taco Cabana but it's been awhile since I've been. It's a good bet if you want something above fast food but don't have time for a regular restaurant.

Car957, thanks for sharing your recipe! I don't care much for La Victoria myself and I find that most of the jars sold in the grocery stores are only so-so, imo. Fresh more than anything else beats the processed hands down! My two favorite hot sauces are On The Border's and El Chico's. But I have an old recipe from a former boss from years ago and it's my absolute favorite.

THanks for the recipe Car I will definitly try it.

Thanks Franklyn for the info. I actually have to go to Round Rock tomorrow so if I can find out where the #4 store is I will stop by. I do like it hot, but beggars cant be choosers.
