I keep hearing everyone mention this and I'm wondering what it is.

Last night on the show HouseHunters they had a family looking for a home in Steiner Ranch and it had to be on the greenbelt. Just curious what it is.

I also noticed that many houses in Steiner Ranch, at least that they showed, had cedar garage doors. Any negatives to having those?

Most times "the greenbelt" is used to describe Barton Creek Greenbelt which is a specific defined area and offers hiking, swimming, or mountain biking. See this link:

Barton Creek Greenbelt

However, lately I've heard it used to describe any property that backs up to land which is preserved for nature or may border on a water source.

"A green belt or greenbelt is an undeveloped area neighbouring an urban area, often protected from development by planning law."
-Wikipedia

Many cities and countries have them.

This is the Greenbelt behind our house. The four bushes on the left are on the property line. A dry/wet weather creek is on the other side of the trees.

Officially it means areas which will remain green and undeveloped, but nothing is forever

Often it refers to areas leading to creeks etc - they are more likely to be kept undeveloped as they are prone to flooding.

In Austin, if it's "The Greenbelt", it's the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

If it's "a greenbelt", then it's any area that hasn't been paved or built over and still has trees and natural things on it.

Now, it may be that the family that was looking in Steiner Ranch was thinking of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve as "The Greenbelt", but that's traditionally been right along Barton Creek.

And some people ask why you would not rather not live in an older established neighborhood right down town.

I still get a kick out of being greeted by the deer in the driveway when I come home.
