I always hire a dog/housesitter to take care of my dog. Luckily I know two UT students that are more than willing to do it for $25 per night which is cheaper than a kennel. Since they're both family friends, I throw in dinner delivery a few nights also. I generally like the sitter to be there from 6pm - 6am but if it's Xmas day, 4th of July, etc. I just ask they go feed & spend an hour with my dog around 5 or 6 pm and come back whenever to stay the night. My dog does have a dog door so it's not an issue with letting her out.

I used this guy as my pet sitter:
Runs With Dogs Pet Sitting in Austin, Texas
David took kept my dog at his house (she slept with him), and he also came to my house to feed my cats. I highly recommend him! I think it's better than boarding. He only goes near the 78704 area code, but you could probably drop your pet off (as opposed to him picking him/her up). Good luck!
