I second New Braunsfel. A guy in one of my classes bought a fixer-upper there, and couldn't say enough good things about it. Then there's always Schlitterbahn......

New Braunfels is great all around. Wimberley is nice but traffic is bad since the streets can't handle the influx of residents and it's difficult to get anywhere from there. San Marcos is good but the schools are bad. Kyle is for first time buyers commuting to Austin and everyone I know who has bought there has had a lot of trouble selling their house since the City has already approved about 10,000 additional lots there's no shortage of new homes for buyers to choose from. Buda is a good mix with nice subdivisions ranging from city lots to acreage west of Buda's downtown but there's nothing there so you'll have to go to Austin for most of your needs...unless you get excited about WalMart & HEB. Hays (Buda & Kyle) is a pretty good school district if your kids are in the schools west of I-35.
