Smaller suburbs?
I am thinking of taking a job in Austin next year. Can anyone recommend some more rural communities that are within a 35 minute drive of austin?
Looking for 9-18k in populaiton that is a nice place for a young family

Well, they're not technically "suburbs" since they're small towns, but:
Taylor
Hutto
Elgin
Lockhart
Buda (slightly over 5000 but growing rapidly)
Leander
are all some options.

Add Dripping Springs to that list.
What part of Austin do you think you may be working in? 35 minutes from one side could be 1 hour + from the other.

I checked, and left Dripping Springs off because, at less than 2000 even at the 2005 census estimate, it falls WAY below the population count the OP specified.

You can't go by city populations. There may only be 2K in the city but within 5 miles of the city there's another 20K.

My thought exactly. The physical boundaries of the city of DS are quite small, but Belterra, HighPointe, Sawyer Ranch, Dos Lagos and a number of smaller neighborhoods all fall under its influence and service area.
Plus, it is only 5 minutes from Belterra to the center of town.

Well, the population restrictions were 6,000-18,000. Which puts Dripping Springs out of the running in either direction!
I personally love Dripping Springs, but I was trying to meet the OP's criteria.

THL
You're a Real Estate agent and therefore put the clients needs and requests first, without bending or breaking rules or promoting one place over the other. I heard about all the real estate laws y'all have down here.
I'm not, so I can shamelessly promote the areas I think are best. (Mainly because I live there!)
Aside from the population numbers, I still think it would meet the OP's criteria.

Hutto is more suburban than rural.
Taylor and Elgin still have that rural feel.

I can agree with that. Hutto is still relatively small, but more and more farmland, especially South of 79 toward Pflugerville, is getting built up. North of 79 and moving towards Georgetown has more rural feel. Then, agree with HappyTexan, East towards Taylor and Elgin, definitely more rural feel.
