I have read a couple of magazine articles, online blogs and other venues that have covered this issue.
What's your opinion? |

disclaimer: a truly Austin experience doesn't necessarily mean good food....
Chuy's is pretty much a requirement, although I really like Hula Hut on Lake Austin blvd. It is out over the water, owned by Chuy's, and usually servers pretty good food. Great in warm weather if you can take a little heat while you eat. Trudy's has always been a favorite for drinks, especially late night; however, I personally am not a big fan of their food (although there are a couple things I like). Magnolia and Kerbey lane would be the other (I can cheat, right?). They are generally very Austin-like establishments, although the wait can be long a lot of the time, and sometimes the wait-staff is a little odd for some more conservative types.... |

I second Kerbey Lane. We just went there last weekend... and the food was good, and worth the wait. I have heard Magnolia is it's counterpart... but not been.
I would also agree with both Chuy's and Hula Hut. What about Salt Lick? |

We had salt lick the other night, and it is a very good place to eat on a nice spring afternoon or a warm summer evening.
. Do not go to the one on Hwy 360, go all the way down 1826 to the 'real' restaurant. It is BYOB and they have live music on a regular basis.Like other good places, it can get crowded, and the road can be dangerous if too many people did the BYOB thing.... I recommend it over County Line, but that is my personal preference. Rudy's and Salt Lick are very similar operations, so try bbq at both places to see what you like. Rudy's sauce is spicier, whereas Salt Lick is sweeter. Salt Lick has an all you can eat, but Rudy's does not. |

And if you haven't been to the Oasis you really need to. Food isn't the greatest but the view sure is!

I'm going to have to go with:
El Chile - newcomer, but the food is excellent and the vibe is Austin Shady Grove - sit outside, try the country fried steak or the hippie sandwich Make the BBQ trek to Lockhart I would avoid Trudy's for any of their food items, just stick with drinking. Maybe after a few drinks you can try the food! Magnolia & Kerbey Lane are very hit or miss depending on the kitchen and wait staff at the location you go to. County Line BBQ isn't very good, but I do enjoy their fresh warm bread. |

Oh, I have to agree with Shady Grove too! You wouldn't see anything like it anywhere but Austin.

I totally agree with AustinGuy on El Chile. It's really, really good.
As for BBQ, that is extremely subjective, but I love IronWorks downtown. Their sauce isn't very sweet which is the way I like it. |

I'll look up El Chile. Thanks!
