Teen Friendly Things to Do in Austin/Winter Break
We have 2 sons - a 17 year old that plays guitar in a "Garage Band" and a 13 yr old that loves all genres of music and is learning to play guitar too. With their love of music we thought Austin's music scene would give our children the opportunity to see and hear some great music over the Winter Break. Are there any teen friendly "Live" music forums? Are they open during the week?
Anyone know of any other things to do with teenagers in Austin - does not have to be music related?
Thanks for any advice,
Dana

read the alternative weekly austin chronicle online.... The Austin Chronicle. it's published each thursday. many venues have afternoon and early evening shows like antones (blues), or the continental club for example. there are some great dance halls nearby (besides the infamous broken spoke here in austin), like gruene hall. great places to hear music special to central texas
plenty of outdoor activities, winter here is mild. some days are even flip flop weather

Thanks for the info ChickenFry and Southdown. I looked at those venues and the Austin Chronicle, but really couldn't find anything specific for the days that we are going to be in Austin. We are just planning on going to Austin on Monday morning December 29th, staying overnight and going back home in the evening 30th. We live just North of Houston so we are familiar with Austin, but just not the "Teen Friendly" places to go. I did find a website for Texas Music Museum and think we all will like visiting there. Also, read about the Mexican bats that fly at Sunset from the Ann Richards Congress ave bridge (?) that's sounds like that would be interesting to see. Now I just need some kind of live music - What about Central Market - do they still have live music for all ages?
Does anyone know of specific places to go or something to do in Austin on those two days?
Thanks again,
Dana

Central Market does usually have live music but not necessarily every day. Most of the bats have gone down to Mexico for the winter, a few stay on but with our recent cold weather, I would guess most are in Mexico. They'll be back in March.
The Texas History Museum can be interesting for teens (depends on the teen, there is an IMAX) and the Blanton Art Museum right across the street can interest some teens too. Take a walk through UT campus, it will be empty but there are nice fountains, head up the LBJ library, lots of stuff on the LBJ-60s era that might possibly interest a teen, again depends on the teen.
Search the Austin Chronicle for "all-ages" shows. But a Monday and Tuesday on the week between Christmas and New Years is going to be kinda slow.
You could also take a walk down South Congress Avenue. Have a burger at Fran's hamburger or pizza at Home Slice, take in Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds, Big Top Candy etc.

Thanks CentralAustinite - I guess most of the Austin travel tips that I had received were more geared for Summer Vacations.

Bumped again - Maybe someone else has more ideas. What about good music stores to visit?

The music gift store on 6th Street is really cool to browse around in. It's called "Wild About Music".
Wild About Music- Music Gifts, Music Art
Waterloo Records is the largest Independent record/CD store in Austin. It's at 6th and Lamar and is a good place to browse around in. It might even be a good place to look at the flyers for bands playing those days in town near the exit door. The employees might even have a recommendation or two.
