That's hard to believe. Either you're exaggerating, or were in the wrong part of downtown nowhere near the entertainment district.

Hmm, Austin's not exactly lacking in strip clubs either.

Really, the differences in these negatives between the two cities are not substantial. Both Austin and Houston have plenty of bad traffic, hot weather, strip clubs, and strip malls. Houston is slightly worse. Not enough for someone in Austin to complain about it IMO. Ask someone from another state and most of them will find these two cities more similar than different in these specific aspects.

The ocean, museums, and pro sports that Houston has are great, but they are totally offset by a downtown that is literally empty after 5 pm, the huge roaches, the torential rains (and subsequent flooding), the endless freeways that are always clogged, the fact that the grocery store is only a mile away but it takes 30 minutes to get there, and you have to drive because there are no sidewalks and trying to walk across a freeway is a death wish, the sweltering heat, etc., etc.
Whatever, like Austin doesn't have these problems too?

Downtown isn't empty! At least not last time I was there one evening about two months ago.

Austitude!!

And to OP: I would agree with what all the others have said as far as what it's lacking.

Austin needs more support for its homegrown businesses. They are the ones that need the tax breaks, not the big box centers and retail complexes. Every time I see an oldie but goodie shut down it makes me sad. These provide color to the city. I still can't believe Toad Hall is gone. I used to take my kids there as toddlers. Now Hilberts is gone. Getting a milkshake there is a family ritual.

I agree with you on this one. The local businesses (the smaller ones, not the mammoth might-as-well-be-national-chains-got-too-big-for-their-britches ones ) need more support from all of us, not just in tax breaks, but in all of us shopping there by preference.
