Artsyguy, Thanks for being polite and letting me share my opinion; my comment was rather off-thread so I apologize for that. I can agree on balanced, ethical government from all parties. Since I'm still an Austinite wanna be, I'll sit back read the posts to follow and learn some more.

I agree that Austin is missing Trader Joe's. It is also spotty on curb recycling. Some communities only recycle cans, bottles and newspapers. We need to have regular pick up of yard waste (which is composted), waste paper other than newspapers, and there should be someplace to take styrofoam.

What's funny is that I first brought up Trader Joe's not as something that I think Austin is lacking but as something that it's funny that those coming from California seem to feel that we just absolutely MUST have in order to be civilized! It really does seem like a cult to those of us who aren't from Trader Joe-land, sometimes, based on the behavior of the True Believers.
While I'm sure I'd enjoy shopping there, I don't know of any store that I feel that strongly about, and I'm pretty serious about my food stores! (Been known to drive to Houston to go to Penzey's, for example.)

I am not coming from CA and i don't think Austin needs one to be civilized, but they cannot be beat for prices, at least up here. They have exotic foods at low, low prices. Like a jar of excellent Thai Green curry sauce for $2.29 or bottles of decent wine for $3.00. They have a vast selection of fine cheeses that cost half of what they do in the grocery stores and their selection of cookies and candy is incredible! It's one of the few places I can find hazlenuts outside of Christmas time. Once you shop there, you too will become a true believer

In that case, the argument that they're a competitor for Whole Foods wouldn't seem to hold water, as Whole Paycheck is anything but cheap!
Tell me, do they carry water buffalo meat? Because if they do, I'll jump on the Trader Joe's wagon. (Whole Foods used to carry it but topped years ago and I can't find another local supplier.)

A big part of Trader Joe's business plan is to find the best small producers of products and sells them as private label brands at major discounts. For example, they repackaged Terra Chips as Trader Joe chips at about 50% the cost of Terra Chips. They change their selection very often too. The store is small, 2K sq ft, but pretty much everything in there you'd want to buy.
There is hope in the next 10 years of them coming here since they also own the discount Aldi chain and that is coming to (or has opened in) Dallas. Once they have the transportation logistics in place, it'll be feasible for them to move here.
