1. Morton's mensware shop, owned by Morton Plotsky, father of Sheila and Nancy( Macallum '65).
2. Shefftal's Jewelry, daughter Kim (Macallum '65).
3. Mosley's Cafeteria, son Alan (Macallum '64).
4. Pharmacy, owned by Les Lind, daughter Lessandra (Macallum '65) and Marvin Moon.
5. Winn's Variety store, run by the Cokendolphers, sons Daryl & Rodney (Macallum '65).
6. HEB, although much smaller than today's store.
7. S&H Green stamp redemption store.
8. White's Automotive & Appliance store.
9. Seems like there was a Gem Fabrics store there too.
10. Hill's Exxon, son Don (Macallum '65).
The shopping center on the other side of Burnet Road between Romeria and Koenig had more stores, but harder to remember:
1. Big Bear Grocery store at the Romeria end.
2. Skillern Drugstore in the middle.
3. Caravel Shoes, where we all got our Buster Browns.
4. There was a hobby shop just south of the Skillerns where we got model cars, planes, coin collecting books, etc.
Western Auto was across Romeria north of Big Bear.
Some of these are way back, but I would be willing to help with a history of Burnet Road if some other's want to contribute.

I would love to know what you know about it. Your experiences are from a different era. Very cool. I do remember the Gem Fabric in Allandale Shopping Center, but some of what you mention was before my time here. Karavel is still there, thank goodness. It's still a great place to get a good fit in shoes. The Hill's Exxon must have been where Amy's is? When you say North Austin State Bank, you're meaning the building just behind Allandale shopping center? I was thinking of the location where Chase bank is now, but now I think I remember a bank where you say.
Would probably take some research at the Austin History Center to put something together, but it would be a very interesting endeavor. Stay in touch, and maybe at least a thread could be started about the history of Burnet Road, if not a website. I'd love to look into it as time permits.
I've asked my husband to talk to Ken at the Omlettry about what was there. Sometimes my memory plays tricks on me, but he's done work for Ken almost as long as the Omlettry's been there.

I thought that the HEB came to the Allendale Shopping Center later. I went to Lamar JH in 1970-71, I don't remember it then.
The name of the the shopping center on Burnet between between Romeria and Koenig is the Northwest Center, I worked at Tom's Scuba for a while.

We lived in Allandale area about 20 years ago. We spent many a weekend at Northcross Mall watching the ice skaters or going to the movies. There was a Weinerschnitzel and Dunkin Donuts across from Lamar middle school. Further down Burnet Road where Savers is now there was a neat old Winn's store with wooden floors.
My earliest recollection of Austin would be about 1970. We would drive up from San Antonio, come around the bend on I-35 near Riverside and see the magical capital building down in the draw. MLK was lined with big old mansions near Guadalupe long ago torn down for fast food chains. A drive to Mueller airport back then was like a drive to the country. The planes used to fly low over our house in Allandale.
Too many changes...

I agree "too many changes". Now when you come around that bend on I-35 you would be hard pressed to find that same capital building.

Yeah, you're right the HEB came later. Remember, in the 70's and probably earlier most people shopped at the Safeway or was it Handy Andy? on the corner of North Loop and Burnet or Tom Thumb at Koenig and 2222. I think there was a Safeway over on 38th Street near Seton too.
Also, I remember Dunkin' Donuts on Burnet across from Lamar and the Academy Surplus just down the street.
We used to go to the PIT BBQ on Burnet years ago. Wonder if that's still there?
This is a great thread. Alwayz makes me wanna cry

Yes, the North Austin State Bank was behind Hill's Exxon which is now Amy's. Across the street from Allandale Shopping Center on the east side of Burnet was the Home Lumber Company owned by the Bohmer family. I used to buy the dowel rods, nails, etc. there for my cub scout projects.
Seems like only yesterday.

The Pit on Burnet is still there.
It is interesting how many people in Austin have special memories of the area along Burnet Road (from 45th to Koenig Lane). The street is not very attractive, kitchy at best. But, is does have its fans...
Remember when you'd drive on North Lamar past 183 and think that you were heading out of town?

It was Handy Andy at North Loop and Burnet Road, but there was a Safeway at Justin Lane and Burnet Road. Last night, I remembered a Whataburger on Burnet Road, too. Or at least I think I do, just can't recall exactly where.

This made me really sad. Highland is on here.
America's Most Endangered Malls - Yahoo! Finance
A HUGE chunk of my childhood was spent there. Anyone remember when the new wing opened in 1979? How shiny and new everything was?
Change sucks. They should have taken a page from the folks that manage the mall up here. No unaccompanied teenagers without an adult. (It's official. I've become my mother).

Mad Dog & Beans...man that brings back memories of hanging out at the Castilian (sp?) and seeing the Dead out at Manor Downs or Iggy Pop down at Club Foot.
Anyone remember the Uranium Savages?
