Lofts/Urban living- Renting in Downtown Austin
I am preparing to look into relocating to downtown Austin and looking to rent. My budget is between $900-1200 per month and I am looking for one bedroom. Only requirements are non-carpet floors- wood or concrete both being fine and an urban feel. I'm flexible about location and other amenities.
I've searched this forum and haven't found much about renting in Austin so I apologize in advance if it's been discussed before- I couldn't find information on my own.
I appreciate your help, thank you!
Ps. Just wanted to add, I've looked on Craigslist a lot and see people leasing their condos, which is helpful and great, but looking for a few complexes that just are primarily apartments.

Just looking on the MLS, in DT proper there's 1 within your price range at the moment. (Many don't appear on the MLS, though.) It is, however, in a house built in 1900, though it does have hardwood floors. The Greenwood Towers at 18th and Lavaca has something available for $1295.
I was going to check out the Triangle, which is just north of UT but fits your parameters otherwise, but their least expensive loft is $1350, it appears.

Yes, I didn't reply because I thought that most of the downtown rentals would be out of your price range.
Contact a realtor or apartment locator and you might have better luck.

Thanks for the replies. I found quite a bit on my own last night searching well into the night... and as long as I'm willing to pay 1100/1200, i actually found quite a bit in my price range.
Just going to post some examples for anyone that finds this thread in the future and is wondering the same thing.
This looks like the building is called Twenty One 24?
**Luxury Loft near downtown **
The Gables West also seems within my price range 1 bedrooms starting at about $950.
Then there's also Crescent by SoCo I believe that offers 1 bedrooms starting at about $990. Granted, you're paying almost $2 per square foot, which IS high, but I believe I do have some choices. I found a lot of craigslist and realty websites of people independently leasing out their places for just over $1000 or so a month.
Hope some of this helps other people doing a search for these terms, and thanks to the other posters for doing some research for me!
TexasHorseLady- I looked at the Triangle website and loved it! But it was the priciest one I looked at so I had to rule it out. I honestly think they're asking a bit too much for those... seems a little unreasonable for me- but if they lease out- then I guess they know what they're doing!

Just an FYI:
I would not consider either Twenty One 24 or The Crescent to be "downtown" they are both close but if someone is looking for a truly downtown loft that is actually downtown (north of the river, south of the Capitol-15th Street, west of I-35 and east of Lamar) those would not fit the bill.
But there is plenty nearby and I imagine that you could find more than a few true downtown condos for rent by individuals in your price range.
good luck!

Great points, thanks! Is there transportation from there? I'm from the middle of nowhere (walkability score 0 of 100) and so I don't mind not being in the center of the action, but being within public transportation to it and in a relatively safe area is important. Does this apply to eat of 35 or no?
Thanks!

I'd check AMLI downtown, AMLI 2 downtown, and the Monarch. I think you could find a small 1 bedroom at the top of your price range ($1200) once you add in all the free month incentives these complexes are offering right now. You'll have to go into the offices to talk to them since they aren't publishing rates this low yet.

True. I was looking right downtown, not going across the river (SoCo), and the Triangle was actually out of the area by a bit. (They are leasing, by the way, from what I understand, so I guess they're not overpriced.)
You might be able to go just a bit east of IH35 and find something. There's a place called Swede Hill something that might be affordable and close.

Watch,
Don't misunderstand, the Crescent off S. Congress is right in the middle of things and has coffeehouse, restaurants, and clubs (Continental) in walking distance, not to mention the trails around Ladybird lake. (its just not technically downtown). And it is served by lots of buses. You might want to look at the Statehouse apartments on S. Congress too.
Come for a visit first and see for yourself.
