Best Mexican food in Austin
Who has the best mexican food in Austin for $12 or less per plate? They must have great enchilladas! I'm really looking for somewhere north of downtown, but if you think you have a suggestion that is worthy, let me know!

Manuel's in Arboretum (and on Congress Ave.)
For a bigger budget, La Fonda San Miguel on North Loop.

Azul Tequila - great Interior Mexican (as good as Fonda San Miguel, but we had lunch for two for $14 the first time we went there), and great TexMex. Not north, but worth the drive.
In Georgetown (haven't tried the ones in Round Rock or Taylor), El Mariachis de Jalisco.

The best Mexican...hmmm...I miss Chuy's the most personally but there are so many GREAT ones. Azul Tequila (more interior Mex but yum!), Habanero (hole in the wall...tiny place...get the Zach Attack), Curra's, Matt's Famous El Rancho (really good enchiladas I think)...but those are all downtown or south of downtown a bit. Trudy's is also great but they are also south.

There's a Trudy's by UT (the original). IThere's also one on Burnet Road between Anderson and 183.

Polvo's and Azul Tequila are the best food (especially for the price), but they are south.
North, I'd say if you are looking for Tex Mex, go to one of the El Arroyo locations. If you are just looking for a nice restaurant, Z-Tejas at the Arboretum is a good choice but it's southwestern style (not Tex Mex or Interior). They have excellent mushroom, pork and chicken enchiladas. Those dishes are under $12, but other things at Z-Tejas are more expensive. Has an excellent patio with a view, too.

Enchiladas y Mas on Anderson are the best enchiladas up north.

There are so many different types of Mexican restaurants in Austin, it's really hard to define "best". Unlike seafood, where the choices are limited, the Mexican in this town ranges from some serious down home Mexican cooking on the East side to 4 star interior style food at Fonda San Miguel to Austin's own version of Tex-Mex. It also depends on what you like -do you like cheesy enchiladas with chili gravy, or something more sophisticated like chicken enchiladas with a poblano cream sauce? Also, when you say north of downtown, how far north?
One little gem in Northwest Austin is Jardin Corona on Pond Springs Road. For interior style without the Fonda San Miguel price tag, Las Palomas in Westlake. La Palapa at I-35 and 290 is good Tex Mex with large portions. Antonios is another good Tex-Mex in that same area (I-35 and 183). Tres Amigos also fits the bill with locations on E 290 and Loop 360 just north of the mall. And of course you can't go wrong with Chuy's with 2 locations north.

I third Azul Tequila. I LOVE that place. Thanks to THL for tipping me off on that one. I went recently and had such a hard time getting to it with map directions hah. We finally got there and my anger melted away as I ate wonderful chicken mole!
For more of a Tex mex place, I really like Papacitos.... I personally disliked Chuy's quite a bit. Not sure what the hype is there. Maybe I need to give it another shot.
