Default native Austinites

Does anyone know the percentage of ppl in this town that were actually born here? I've met a lot of ppl that have "lived here since the 80's...moved when they were young..etc." But have only met one person actually born here. Does anyone have an idea about this demographic?

thanks

No idea, really, but I work with two people that were born and raised here, one one that was born here but moved away young and back recently.

I just suspect the number is lower than most people realize. The two most famous Austinites popular culture knows: Lance Armstrong and SRV - both moved here from Dallas

Yeah, not too many famous ones, I suppose, but probably lots of ones that aren't famous .

Yes, the number is small in part because not that long ago, Austin was quite small too! I recently downloaded a spreadsheet from the Austin history center that gives the population in Austin.

For example in 1940 only 87,930 people lived in Austin, so naturally the number of native born Austinites who are over 70 is going to be quite small. In 1960 the population was 186,545, in 1970 251,808. So there must be a fairly small number of natives in their 40s and 50s too, even if every single one stayed in town.

Even in 1980 there were only 345,890 folks in town.

In comparison, in 2000 there were 656,769 people and in 2008, 750,525.

In my house though, native born Austinites are the majority!! Three kids all born in Austin.

I didn't move here until I was 19, back in the Dark Ages. However, I've given birth to a native Austinite (now an adult), and know several more that I've known since they were born - does that count?

I know one or two out this way who were born in Austin. They are no older than 30 and just moved out this way to be more rural. Most natives I know are people who were born either in Austin or a surrounding town out this way...lots of people in Hutto are native to Hutto (born in RR), Granger and Taylor. But, like I said, I know only about 2 who were born IN Austin and grew up IN Austin.

TheDynamicMan is on a distinguished road
I've been here two years and have easily met 600-700 people. Out of that sample, I'd say 10-15 have been native localites. Very weird.

Wasn't born in austin, but go there when I was 1.5 yrs old. I lived there until about 4 months ago (except for brief extended vacations during the 80's). 38 years ago, and my how Austin has changed over that time.
