As someone who lived in Austin for 8 years (one of Forbes most family friendly) and just moved to San Antonio 9 months ago (one of Forbes least family friendly cities), I have to agree with the list in some ways.

Austin is very family friendly
- the parks are abundant
- the preschools are great and strive for excellence
- there are lots of clean and cheap places to have playdates
- the neighborhoods are master planned and geared towards families
- we used to live in Cedar Park and it just felt more like a "community"

San Antonio lacks:
- parks, sure we have the zoo and Sea World, but those require major planning, not just a hop in the car to go play on a playscape
- my experience with preschool here has been mediocre
- families here for the most part do not "play" outdoors
- master planned communities are just starting to enter the real estate market

One thing I'd like to mention - I managed to raise both of my kids (in Austin) to successful adulthood without ever stepping foot in a master planned community. As did thousands and thousands of other folks over the years, and they're still doing it. That's NOT a requirement for "family friendly", not even close. Not that master planned communities can't be very nice, but to think that because a city isn't made up of them that it's not family friendly is way off the mark.

I haven't lived there, though my husband grew up there, but I recall San Antonio as having quite a few parks (including Breckenridge, where we took our children often when we'd be visiting his mother in San Antonio).

When I talk about parks....in Cedar Park, I had 4 parks less than a mile from my house. So I could always hop in the car last minute and take the kids. Brackenridge park in San Antonio is about a 40 minute drive from my house.
