Default recommendations on best area or areas to live in Austin for Interracial family

central, south or north for interracial family with small kid? we like affordable housing, quiet and culture nearby, educated folks but down to earth?

Price range is the biggest determinant. I know interracial families who live north, south, and central. I do not think that one area is measurably different than another when it comes to general tolerance.

"Educated but down to earth" describes all of Austin pretty well.

i ask this because as a black person, i am not niave that there are still people in many places that do not want blacks and interracials or minorities living next to them or wont rent or sell to us, so i was hoping to find a good regular neighborhood where at least educated people lived but was affordable--but not like hyde park downtown.

we have some of the same problems here in philadelphia so one has to ask to know where to go and not to go, it can be dangerous for us

Sure, P-ville is affordable, and I assume that the lots are big. Cedar Park and Round Rock would work too. Depends on your price range, job, commute, etc. Since I rarely venture north of 183 (okay, I was just up that way last weekend), I'll let more experienced folk fill you in on the details.

You might want to look south at Kyle/Buda too, maybe Manor if you don't mind being fairly far out. Soil is better to the east. Expect to bring in all the dirt to grow veggies anywhere west of I-35.

I grew up in St. Louis and I know what you are talking about. There would be few places that I would hesitate to recommend in St. Louis and St. Louis County for an interracial family but I have to say that after 18 years here, I cannot think of a place in the metro area where I would definitely say "whoa, don't live there."

Of course, there are jerks everywhere, but as a general rule, in Austin, your family will not merit a second glance and will most likely be warmly welcomed.

Welcome!

i thank you for your honesty and i believe you are right. i grew up in arlington tex, the only black family in a white middle class neighborhood and had few if not any problems in the 80s-though dating was an issue as most parents still didnt accept that but it wasnt bad.

so i am glad to think about coming back to texas and not facing many problems. my cousin lives in San Anton with his mexican american wife and bi racial kids and love it and other family members live interracially , but i didnt know about Austin

The older sections of Pflugerville have big lots..the newer ones have your standard small lot. Not too big if you have kids AND want a garden.

The neighborhoods of Brookhollow and Saxony are walking distance to elementary/middle schools, the park (with a pool), hike and bike trails.
Schools are good and people are friendly and now there's more commercial (Walmart, Home Depot and soon a Target) so you have close convenience.

As far as planting veggies..east of I35 is black clay and west of I35 is mostly rock. The veggies thrive east of I35 with some prep.

Austin, Round Rock, Taylor, Georgetown and even Pflugerville have Farmer's Markets during season. Only one that I know of is year round.
