There is so much geared towards kids in RR. That's due to environmental restrictions in the SW. If you have kids, you probably want to be in Round Rock, there's just so much more for kids to do up there. It's a very nice family friendly area with major employers nearby & you'll get a much nicer house with more to choose from to.
I think the UT lab school is good, but you probably won't get the community feel you'll get at GS, AS or St.M. It's very hard to get in, the times are odd, and the teacher turnover is huge. Have to disagree on the SW thing. From what I hear, the Circle C preschool is pretty good. I haven't heard of any other preschools North...wait, I think there is a montessori up there that's pretty good. Can't recall the name. Oh, and Lake Austin Montessori is also supposed to be very good, also hard to get into.

I just moved here about a month ago. While I was looking for more of a day care, everywhere I called (NW) had availability. They even made comments that they were having drop outs due to the economy, etc.

Not sure I picked the "best." I was at one of the "best" in NYC and figured my daughter would be fine at a "regular" one for a semester. Wasn't something I was going to stress about.
