Please, can anyone offer advice about this neighborhood? Is it safe? What's the population like? (We're both high school teachers and my husband is going to be working at a private school in the downtown area.) I have done a lot of research but if anyone lives nearby it would be great if you could give a "snapshot" opinion of the area.
Not the worst area, not the best area. The schools in the area are not the best for sure, I think that the area may feed into McCallum or Lanier High schools. If you are looking into Circle C, also maybe look the other way(North) around Parmer and Mopac, its better on Parmer WEST of Mopac though. Good Highway access and 15-30 mins to downtown depending on traffic. Tons of shopping, and restaurants in the area. It doesn't have the most authentic Austin feel though.

I'd just like to say to whoever was considering central Austin, we do have some good schools. As someone said, it seems to be the common wisdom that we do not, or at least not in comparison...but we do. I've worked and observed in several school districts, and seen problems in each, urban and suburban alike. My kids were well prepared for post-graduate studies at respected universities after graduating from Austin schools.

I think that Central Austin has decent to good schools and McCallum is a good school, I should have worded it better in my last post. The area that the OP was referring too is North Central. The North Central schools above St. Johns up past Braker up to Parmer are not so good including Lanier, the middle schools, and the elementary schools.

Sorry, I was typing my post as you were typing yours. I hadn't even read it. I'm just referring to the implication of school superiority elsewhere. Getting a bit tired of that, but it wasn't from your last post.

No problem,I totally understand your point. I just didn't want the OP to have a false sense of security about that particular area.
