Round Rock?
We are looking at moving to the Round Rock area, from wash state. Any info on the area, positives, negatives? I am a little concerned about the greater Austin area being the liberal hot bed of Texas as that is what we are trying to get away from in WA. Is There acreage availble? we are all about youth football, horses and waterskiing , any lakes ? what about the schools? we home school in WA, any one familiar with homeschool laws in TX? any info would be appreciated. , or if another area sounds more suitable ! thanks!

If you check out the Austin forum and do a Search, you'll find TONS of information about Round Rock. As for the whole liberal thing, it really is pretty much blown out of proportion. There are all kinds of people here and honestly, nobody really cares how you vote. I like to use the word "tolerant" more so than liberal. And that is certainly not a bad word!
I'll leave your post here since you are also asking about other areas, but do check out the Austin forum. Let me know if you want this post moved there.

I have to totally agree with this!
We just moved here from Western WA about 5ish months ago. We very much like it, though we knew we would as we have visited for quite some time. It's a big change, but a very positive one.

Sounds like you would find a place here, without any problem. There are several lakes surrounding Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, etc. What we have seen (and love about this place, Austin & suburbs in general) people are very involved in their children's activities - and youth sports, of course, is a big one.

Most recently, we lived in Bothell/Mill Creek - but we also lived in Magnolia, Redmond and Issaquah during our time in WA.
What area are you in?
I would sort of put RR into the Issaquah/Redmond category, I think. It's really nice, as suburbs go. We are very happy here. Way more so than in WA.

Well, almost everyone on this forum will complain about the traffic - however it's nothing like Seattle traffic... so while commute time traffic isn't good anywhere, I think it's pretty average, considering Seattle is one of the worst in terms of traffic. Additionally, no one here gets worried and freak out when the sun comes out, which often hampers traffic in Seattle
Make sure when you compare home costs, that you also include property taxes, utilities and insurance. Property taxes here, are about double what we paid in Western WA.
The housing market is not as hot as it is in WA - find a home you plan on being in for some time. At least in RR, I have seen homes sit for months. It's hard to sell resale right now, with so much new construction going on... I guess that's one negative about RR. It's still being built up - and many streets and neighborhoods are constantly under construction.
Do you have a job offer? Will you be working in Round Rock?

I just googled "cities for worst traffic" and Austin didn't make the top 12 - but then again, neither did Seattle - which I find ODD.
Other TX cities did make the list, however. This is 2006 info.

I can't believe Dallas traffic made the cut. I never had problems getting from place to place in Dallas!

I totally agree about the liberal thing being overblown. As a native New Englander, I came here mistakenly thinking it would be as liberal as New England - it's not! But the tolerant part is very accurate. You will especially find it more conservative up in the RR way, I think.
I currently live on the very north border of Austin, with Round Rock schools. As for commuting, I commute to UT during peak travel hours, and I have about a 45 minute commute most days, sometimes longer (like yesterday when we had thunderstorms so traffic was bad) but sometimes closer to 35 minutes on a great day.
