Before my dad decided to sub out and build his own house, he walked into a couple different KB homes at various stages. He said most of them were pretty good but one of them was at the stud stage and he said it was one of the best construction jobs so far that he had ever seen.

The point: its not always about the builder, its about the crew that is building your house. Your house could be perfect and your neighbor next door could have a lemon.

And this isn't a KB problem. This runs all across the board...many, many builders. There are people in 500k or million dollar homes that run into the same problems as people buying 150k homes. Just because you are spending more doesn't always mean it will be built any better.

Have a 3rd party inspector check it out. If they can't find much negative to say, then you should have a relatively good house. If they find issues, have them addressed. If they are to big to address (like the stucco the other poster mentioned) then think long and hard about that house.

FalconheadWest, you right... paying attention to the neighborhood is essential, specially if you have kids that will be going to the surrounding schools. When we were looking at KB in the Spring Trails area, we had already made up our minds about putting out little on on private school because the schools in that area are not the best. I would suggest looking at schools in the area you are looking at first, by the way, this is a great site, Great Schools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community. This web site has very comprehensive data on a lot of different aspects when it comes to rating a school. Now that we are in the Cypress Canyon area in Cedar Park could not be happier... The rating on those schools are excellent.

One more thing i would like to say about KB that definitely needs to improve if they want to change their image not only because there are issues with the way the built houses is the customer services quality. When we told our sales guy at KB that we were not going to buy the house, he went off on us. They were great when we are agreeing with them, once you don't agree with them things are different.

We bought one 7 yrs ago in South Austin. We love it. The construction is solid and we paid $172,000 for a fully upgraded 3200 sq ft house. We had a few minor cosmetic issues after we moved in, but they were fixed right away and we have had no problems in the past 6 yrs.

For the money they were definitely worth it! We have checked out the appreciation values on our house and other homes by other builders in the same area, and the figures were roughly the same....except the fact that we got a lot more house for the money!
