Pretty close to reality. I'm not sure who the first person was to ever try this fruit, but they had to be absolutely desperate.

Shark Fin soup is indeed considered a delacacy, but the people consuming it are either ignorant of thier impact or simply irresponsible and stupid. Sharks ARE becoming endangered. Period. It's a documented fact by scientists, not environmentalists. The Oceans are the center of our ecosystem. Whether you eat seafood or not, your daily existense depends on healthy Oceans. Sharks were, at one time, the highest order predator in the ocean and thier natural function was to maintain healthy balances via thier natural predatorial instincts. Our Oceans have become grossly out of balance in the last 50 years due to the gross over fishing that has taken place. The population of sharks, specifically have dwindled to less than 50% of the numbers only 50 years ago. Think about that. For MILLIONS if years, the oceans ecosystem was healthy and fish population was abundant. In only 50 years, the balance has been destroyed. Scientific fact, not Environmental propaganda. I'm not even going to get into the cruelty of it, but I will say this. Sharks are not the monsters "JAWS" and popular media want you to believe. A couple of species are outwardly aggressive, but most are not. They are beautiful animals and need to be protected and appreciated for thier contribution to our ecosystem, not villified for ratings on news shows and movies.

Think about that. If you continue to support overfishing, and finning, you will now fall into the category of irresponsible and stupid, because you are no longer ignorant about it.
Moderator cut: off topic Anyone who is a real scientist and has studied the issue and isn't just lapping up on articles written by propagandists would know that the extinction of a natural predator would harm nothing in the long run and that new species will evolve to take their place. I have no problem with future generations eating artificial shark fin soup as long as I get to enjoy it today.

And how many millions of years will it take this new species of predator to evolve? Nothing racist about it. It just happens that they are the only ones who have a proclivity towards this "delicacy." Norway still gets ridiculed by environmentalists for whale hunting if it makes you feel any better.

Stinky fruit doesn't sound like something I'd like to try Even if it tasted delicious, my sense of smell has been magnified to the tenth degree after each of my four children. I suffer very terribly when something stinky is even across the room I'm like a real life mutant My sense of smell is THAT powerful It was terrible while house hunting. We'd walk in and I'd immediately smell - dog/pee/smoke/boy laundry. We'd eventually find the source so that my hubby and realtor would smell it too.

The Durians you get here in Austin are almost always frozen so they supposedly aren't as odorous as the fresh examples you would get in places like Thailand.

I bought a frozen durian the other day here in Louisiana. Ive been enjoying the durian ming bean cakes like the one described in this thread and reallyl iked the taste and smell of those so I decided to jump in and try the real thing. I am in love. I even like the smell. My roommates HATE it. Thats the problem I am currently facing. Id like to indulge in more of it but I dont want to be kicked out of the house!
