Yeah of course you can live there. I lived in the South Austin area and it's not like I got shot on sight or violence took place every second of the day but things can happen. Just be cautious to those who decide to live in those areas because if something does happen, well that's on your part. :\

As a general rule, avoid every zip code in Metro Austin that doesn't include the central core of Austin or Avery Ranch.

Zip codes are too big a geographic unit to consider when deciding if a place is high crime or low crime.
APD's Crime Viewer is a good way to find out what is going on in a particular neighborhood:

I never experienced any property crime until I moved to the suburbs (Anderson Mill). Never had any problems living in apartments off Riverside, except for the occasional college kid offering up marijuana from his doorway.

I wasn't trying to paint Austin as a dangerous place. You don't have it near as bad as here in Jackson, and we only have around 176k people living in the city (around 500k in the metro).

Like you I am considering a move to Austin as well... we are in a different situation as we are a little older than you (in our 30's) but we have a young child so obviously we want safe areas as well. Fortunately I know somebody who lives there that is also a cop. He told me the city as a whole is extremely safe, one of the safest in the country. I think we are going to check in Round Rock which apparently is very nice. Really the only area and I think it's a suburb to avoid was Del Valle, he said the area was sketchy and the schools were not very good.
