Moving to Austin - what Zipcodes or areas to avoid?
Moving to austin. I just wanna know which places to absolutely avoid. I'm gonna be getting an apartment, so I need some good areas where a 19 year old can live alone, safely. Some suggestions free of gangs or theft...(i know thats a lot to ask)... would be appreciated.

Well, Austin is actually a pretty safe city. There's probably only 2, maybe 3 questionable spots. Probably avoid some parts of East Austin, parts of Braker Ln. area. Other more knowledgeable people will answer so I'll leave the rest to them.

Avoid the north Austin around areas around Rundberg Ln. The areas along Riverside Drive and Oltorf east of i-35 seem kind of like scetch city too but seem to be popular among college students. Some parts of East austin are getting better but some areas are still scary. Stick to 78704, 78745, 78741, 78744. I live in 78704 and have never had any problems.

I live off Slaughter and there aren't problems here - we're off Manchaca, and I'd not go further east that that when you're in south (not south central) Austin. It does seem that around Stassney and E. William Cannon it's a tad sketchy.

I live just north of Braker off of Parmer and East of 35 and it is very nice. I like it.
AVOID:
RUNDBERG LANE aka: Hookercrackheadville.
NORTH LAMAR which is an intersecting street of Rundberg. Satan's portal to Austin. Oops did that slip out.
CAMERON RD
STASSNEY LN
WILLIAM CANNON/35 My family lives there and I make them visit me in Pflugerville instead of going back there.
SOUTH FIRST UNTIL YOU GET NEAR SLAUGHTER LN
OLTORF
PLEASANT VALLEY
RIVERSIDE.
The entire 78701,78702, 78744, 78741, 78758, 78753(yeah this one is mine but I am at the cusp of 78660) ZIPs.
Heres a big hint: Stay West of I-35.
SEE NICER AREAS BELOW:
Leander, Cedar Park, Pflugerville, Round Rock, West Austin, Southwest and Northwest Austin.
78759, 78727, 78728, 78729, 78745, 78704, 78731, 78660, 78664, 78751, 78750, 78736.

WEll my original plan was to live in close 5 to 10 mile proximity to an ACC campus. But it seems like the NORTH RIDGE, RIVERSIDE, and SOUTH AUSTIN campuses aren't in good places. So most likely i'll need something close to the RIO GRANDE campus, in zip code 78701.

Oh please! Riverside and South Austin are fine. Safe even.
Where are you coming from? If you have even a hint of street smarts you will be fine. I have said it before and looks like I have to say it again. East Austin (including Riverside and Oltorf) are safe areas. Are there homeless camps in places? Yes. Are there lots of hispanic kids going to high school? Yes. Are there poor people? Yes. But there is not random senseless violence! Ask a cop. Have you ever lived in a sketchy area of Chicago, or Atlanta, or DC? You will fall down laughing when you see "the bad area" of Austin. Avoid Rundberg and Lamar, be wary of Dove Springs (south near William Cannon and I-35) but even there . . . really, it is poverty more than waves of crime!
And the Riverside area is chock full of UT students! You'll fit right in. I lived in the Riverside area for seven years, I have lived just off Oltorf for another 7 years. I feel perfectly safe. I have little kids as do most of my neighbors.
Get a grip and don't rule out south austin and riverside until you get here.

I can guarantee you that even if you do end up living in an undesirable area of Austin, you're probably not going to be hassled or attacked by anyone. Also, if you're young, north Austin is snoresville. Try to stay south or central if you value your social life.
