Default Places to Live in Austin?

I am headed to Austin this weekend to scout out some areas I may be interested in moving to. If anyone has any suggestions I would be forever grateful.
We are a early 30's professional couple with no kids. I would love a house with character (older would be great) in a safe area. Large yard for the doggies. I am not into neighborhoods where every house looks the same. Would consider outlying areas as long as there are professional jobs around. Researched Hyde Park and Tarrytown, but I'm not a millionaire. I would also consider living farther away for a great view or to be on around the water. My sister is considering moving to SoCo, not as familiar with that area. Also if anyone knows a Realtor that is honest and non- pushy, would like contact info.

Thanks in Advance.

Try 78704 (SoCo area) or Crestview area to the north.

Those are both good suggestions. Also, try south of the river but not SoCo - Travis Heights, Barton Hills, Apache Shores (further out, but close to the lake) or other parts of Lakeway.

What is your price range - that will help pinpoint things a bit more.
