Default Williamson County Homestead Exemption

Does anyone know when they mail out the exemption forms to re-file in Williamson County?

I thought I already got mine by this time last year.

In Travis, you don't have to do one every year. Once you file the homestead extension it stays on until you file to change it. I think Williamson is the same, I owned a house there and don't recall filing a homestead exemption more than once. You can check if you have the exemption by looking up your house on wcad.org.

Also, they don't ever mail those homestead exemptions forms, as I recall... the mailings are usually scams that want you to pay $25 or whatever to file it. It's free, you can print it from their website or pick it up at the CAD office.

Again, though, I don't think you need to file it every year. You DO need to file a protest every year if you don't agree with the appraisal amount.

Thanks. Just read this on the back of the online form:

Re-filing. If the chief appraiser grants the exemptions, you do not need to reapply annually. You must reapply, however, if the chief appraiser requires you to do so by sending you a new application asking you to reapply. You must notify the chief appraiser in writing if and when your right to any exemption ends or your qualifications change.

I know you kinda already figured this out, but I just wanted to verify you do not have to do this every year in WilCo. We did it our first year and that was it.

Thanks.

One less thing to worry about every year.

I can't stand these. I always make sure I tear it up and mail back to them so they at least have to pay the return postage.

This is absolutely correct. If you bought the property in the last year, your agent might mail you a copy of the form in January, but if anyone wants money to file any exemptions for you, it's a scam.
