I just read this article today. Sad state of affairs.

I have to take what AustinTexan says in stride. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how angry it makes me. I've actually gotten a kick out of this thread and others where "transplants" are bashed.

Yes, I'm a transplant, and I'm damn proud of it. I'm proud that my husband and I were able to give my family a better life. I'm proud that I live in Texas and I'm also proud to have my Cleveland Indians decal on my car. I'm proud to wear my Ohio University Alumni shirt. But I'm also VERY proud to call Texas my home now. I usually find that where people are from is a great way for conversations to arise. And when people see my Indians decal, it's usually not to say something about an Ohio team, but usually a comment is made about the team of the '90's. We didn't move here because of a top 10 list or because we threw a dart at the map of the "United" States. A job opportunity arose for my husband and it happened to be in Austin. And yes, I got a teaching job that was, as so nicely stated by AT, taken away from a native Texan. I applied, I interviewed, and I was offered the position. Could it have been because I was the most qualified? Could it have been that my administrators thought I could make a difference in the lives of the 700 kids I see weekly? I would like to think so. People come and go out of states all the time. Job security doesn't rely on you living and being born in that state.

I'm not dogging AT. Again, he or she is entitled to his or her opinion. In fact, I would have to agree that there are some not so nice Northerners. But please, don't put us all in the category. I'm one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. And if you passed me in the grocery store, you'd never know if I was a native or and ex-Ohio-an. I didn't move here to change anything about Austin. I moved here because an opportunity presented itself. And now, looking at how Ohio is hurting with the economy, I'm thankful we moved. We all make choices and who is anyone to judge those choices? No one knows why anyone moves to Austin, unless we take the time to get to know that person. We can't assume it's because of a top 10 list or because of the weather. And for those who are moving because of that, so be it. It's the great country we live in and we are free to move as we like.

That is such a inane statement.

I always thought of Ohio as fringe-Midwest not East Coast "north"...never pictured folks from Ohio as rude either so that was a rather interesting comment. I lived in Austin from 96-98 and then again 2000-2007 and that change in the two years I was gone was absolutely remarkable. Came back to visit in 2008 and was absolutely shocked at the changes in just one year! Esp. around Town Lake (oh sorry, Ladybird Lake...I'll never get used to that one). I can see where those who have lived in Austin most of their lives are concerned about the change but I don't think you can blame it on the newcomers as of late. They weren't there when the big boom started!!

I'll never get used to Lady Bird Lake either--it will always be Town Lake to me. The same way with Congress Ave Bridge! I can't get used to calling it Anne Richards Bridge or whatever it is going by now.

I know half the state of California is moving or has moved to Texas, but I can't help but notice how many people from Ohio and Georgia (mainly Atlanta area) are now making Austin and Texas home. If you go to the Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio sites, there are tons of people moving from these 2 states. My question is why does it seem as if Texas has become the primary location of interest? Is it the economy? The weather? Both? All of the above? In my neighborhood alone, I know of 5 families who have recently moved here from Ohio. I think ever since Texas played Ohio State in Austin and Austin got a lot of national exposure from the media, I've noticed a huge increase in Ohio license plates. I know that's not the only reason and it's probably a small reason, but I'm just curious what drives people to move across the country without ever even visiting first?

Funny thing is, Texas ranks just in the middle of the pack now per unemployment rate, at 6%.....sounds like folks are just going with the mass herd thing.......some states are below 5%, and are prob getting nil to no interest per economic relocatees........One thing that I can't understand is how some energy-related states like Wyoming, Oklahoma,
and such have well paying grunt work, some in the range of 6 figures, with no takers.....everyone seems to have made up their herd mind that Texas is the place for them to go......too bad, as other states have far less competition with even better job prospects......keep in mind that mob mentalities bring us things like internet and real estate bubbles.........
and the same mob mind has decided to come to Texas enmasse.......

Go figure....

Why don't you talk to some real native Austinites and see what they think about all this growth? Our hill country is being torn down and replaced with condos, strip malls, and shopping centers, and it's malarkey? Our downtown is being built up with high rise condos that ruined the landscape of cities like Miami, and it's malarkey? It sounds like you need a wake up call. Next time you're jobless and are competing with 50 other people from out of state for the same position, stop and think about this "malarkey" we discussed because I know several people who can't even land a teaching position and are competing with all these transplants coming here for the few openings available. When our kids graduate high school and are looking to attend a state college or university, guess what? They'll be competing with all these transplants for a spot at those schools as well.

Steady population growth is healthy and good for a lot of reasons.....population booms like what we're seeing in Austin and around Texas is NOT GOOD!! Look what it did to California. California is an overcrowded, overpriced, dump. Period. Those same people who made California the dump it is today are now headed to Texas to do the same. Not only that, but all their cousins, friends, and family from up North are joining in. As much as people use to hate on Texas in years past, those same people sure can't get here fast enough. Texas has now become the "in thing, the place to live" and everyone wants their piece of the pie. Hopefully, the recession will help keep a lot of the would be transplants from being able to afford the move here and local companies will really start to enforce the "hire locally first" slogan. I know a lot of companies already do so, I just wish every company would hire locals and Texans first before even considering someone from out of state.
I think we are REALLY addressing something called the "Mob Mentality"...
that's when hundreds of thousands decide enmasse that something is the right thing to do, and that to be done all at the same time.....hundreds of thousands relocating to Texas from out of state at the same time, and using city-data boards to confirm their enmasse decisions would qualify as such..........Mob movements NEVER make sense, and are based on panic and hype, exactly the key ingredients in the push to move to Austin, and Texas in general........
Finally, keep in mind that the vast majority of these folks are economicallydesperate, and most likely downsized permanently from a profession, or have little to no skills to offer.......these folks naturally will gravitate, in their desperation, to any economic hype whatsoever.....these people are really no different than the Mexican unskilled and desperate who have poured over the border for decades, without roots, looking for hope....

I really find your post quite OFFENSIVE--so much, that I am not even going to address all the points in it that I would like to.

Some of those States also have low populations in general so those companies are probably chock full of locals with little need for new employees yet. Hence the low unemployment rate. I think places like Texas, even if it is in the middle, have more companies around to fill with locals and transplants alike.

Another reason could be that people in those states are doing jobs that most transplants to Texas aren't doing. Maybe people in Wyoming, Oklahoma, etc...are doing labor jobs as well as more "brain" or white collar jobs. Just reading these posts, almost all the transplants are asking about IT jobs. Not ranching, oil, truckdriving, well digging, geology, etc. The only other 2 career fields I see alot of people asking about are teaching and nursing/medical. I bet if some of those people just took what they could get until they got what they wanted, our unemployment numbers might be lower.

I have to defend TGH. I'd much rather see jobs go to transplants who are legal, hardworking American citizens no matter their heritage than to Illegals being hired by companies who are just looking at hiring people for next to nothing just so they can take more money home and in the process abuse the illegal as well..ie, don't offer benefits, pay under the table, no workers comp and on and on.
