Yes, I came from a state that could easily fit entirely into Big Bend national park, or the DFW metro area. I was closer to Massachusetts than I am now to Georgetown. It was quite a transition. But that was many, many years ago... and now I find I don't identify at all with the people and attitudes of NE. I wouldn't go back.

Surprisingly, I've met more RI transplants in Austin than I ever would have expected...

Well, if you are going to leave the smallest state you might as well move to the largest (in the lower 48 that is)! That's what we decided when we moved here the last time.

A transplant in Colorado would be someone who is not from Colorado (i.e. a Californian). Got it? I know you're a little slow, but hang on, you'll catch on soon enough. I don't consider someone who is a Texan (born and raised) a transplant for moving to another city in Texas. But feel free to twist the facts and make up lies.

paulmm, feel free to "dig up" an old post where I admitted that I was a "transplant" and that I moved here during my adult life. Please try to substantiate your lies, transplant.
I never said you admitted to being a "transplant". I said you are one, and you are. Of course, you'll never call yourself that because it might actually make you look at things with an open mind, and that would cut down on your knee-jerk rants. I said you moved from somewhere else to Austin, and you did. That's what a transplant is. I thought you said you moved here for college, which would have made you an adult in my book; sorry if I got that wrong. You whine about people moving to Austin, but you're not from here; you're from somewhere else in Texas, so you're a transplant - it's that simple, but you just don't want to admit it because then it shows just how foolish all your "if you're not from here, go home" posts really are. Of course, since you're such a pleasant, happy-go-lucky, positive transplant, it's okay that you moved here because you represent all that is good about Austin so well.

And I assume the asterisks above in your post is you swearing? Nice touch - stay classy, AustinTexan!

Always loved RI. Used to visit it a lot when I lived in MA. My sister worked there, too, and had a great time. Very unlike Texas from what I can tell so far, but a really cool state, just like Texas is!

Thumbs down Y'all still quibbling about this?

If just being born in Texas is all that matters, why do so many Austinites denigrate Dallas and Houston as being "soul-less" and/or "materialistic"? It would stand to reason that their citizens would not be welcome here either?

Hey, don't knock the transplants (living formerly or currently in Austin), you never know who might contribute something

(hometown in parenthesis)

Clifford Antone (Founder of Antone's) -Port Arthur, TX
Wes Anderson (Director) - Houston, TX
Lance Armstrong (Bicyclist, athlete) - Plano, TX
Louis Black (founder of the Chronicle) - New Jersey
Terry Bozzio - (drummer, played with Zappa) -San Francisco
Berkeley Breathed (cartoonist, Bloom County) - California
Shawn Colvin (singer-songwriter) - North Dakota
Walter Cronkite (iconic journalist) - Missouri
Michael Dell (CEO Dell Computers) - Houston, TX
Kinky Friedman (singer, politician) - Chicago
Eliza Gilkyson (singer-songwriter) - California
Patti Griffin (singer-songwriter) - Maine
Bill Hicks (comedian) - Georgia
Marion Jones (olympic athlete) - California
Janice Joplin (singer) - Port Arthur, TX
Mike Judge (cartoonist, director) - Ecuador (raised in New Mexico)
Richard Linklater (director) - Houston,TX
James McMurtry (singer-songwriter) Fort Worth, TX (raised mostly in Virginia)
Dennis Quaid (actor) - Houston, TX
Andy Roddick (pro tennis player) - Nebraska
Charles Umlauf (sculptor...you know, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden here in Austin?) - Michigan
Townes Van Zandt (singer-songwriter) - Fort Worth, TX
Stevie Ray Vaughan (guitarist) - Dallas, TX

There's a ton more, especially musicians who aren't from here originally. Most of Austin's musicians were/are transplants.

Well said Twange! You do not have to be a native Texan to contribute in a positive way to the growth of a region. This mentality of "I was born and raised here and I belong--you don't" is OLD and TIRESOME!

We are all part of the United States of America the last time I checked. Remember "United we stand, divided we fall"????

More importantly, those who helped win Texas her independence were transplants, some even from, oh my, Great Britain. Very few "natives" fought in that war, if any. I'd have to check the history books to be sure.

AustinTexan will become famous soon enoughAustinTexan will become famous soon enough
paulmm, I've never referred to people who have moved to Austin from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc. as transplants. In my book (and in my rants), I've ONLY referred to transplants as people moving to Austin AND Texas from others states as transplants! But since you are so good at twisting the truth and making up lies, say what you want. And since you're so good at researching my old posts, why don't you go back and find a post where I referred to other Texans as transplants for moving to Austin! You can't!!! My rants have been about transplants in Austin and in Texas! Austin transplants are my biggest concern since I live here (almost all my life!), but I see the problem all over the state. And about me being a transplant, stop reaching. I was born in Austin, lived here until I was in 7th grade, moved down south to live with my dad until I graduated from high school, and then moved back to attend UT where I graduated and have lived here ever since. You don't know jack **** about me, so stop making stuff up. If you don't evidence to support your lies, keep your mouth shut!

atxcio- Rhode Island??!! Sounds like little man syndrome to me. You move from the smallest state in the country to the biggest so you can go back and yell "hey, hey, look at me, I live in Texas." Figures.......

mego65 is on a distinguished road
I'm sorry, but Austin, or even Texas is not the only place people move to. I like in California, I consider you a transplant if you were not born in this county. However, I can not afford a house in my county where I was born and raised therefore I will look for a place that I can afford. I realize that will make me a transplant and I will change the community in some way. But, that is the world we live in.

I did not pick Austin because of top 10 lists or of "keep Austin weird", I'm moving to Austin because my brothers live there. I guess they may be considered transplants in your mind since they moved into Texas at the age of 7 and have lived in Austin since they graduated college.

I am moving to Austin, so I can find a job and a house. I will be close to my brothers and actually be an aunt to my niece and nephew. I am a wonderful teacher and hope to be able to make a difference in the Austin area. I don't care if one person does not want me, they don't know me.
