Hmmm. It could be either Houston black (black gumbo clay) or sandy loam, I'd think, based on where it is. Love Roses, you around? Can you answer this?

Houston black. I live in Travis county just south of Hutto. Houston black all around.
Once you get close to Milam county (around Thorndale) you start to see pockets of loamy soil.
Here's a good website where you can see exactly what soil you have :

There's parts of eastern Williamson County that have sandy loam, as well. (Not working from a survey, working from having friends with horse properties in the area and from showing horse properties in the area, and soil type is VERY important when you have horses, she says looking out the window at her Houston black mud-coated Morgans in the pasture. )

Okay, that's interesting. I went to that site and went through the process, only to find that our ranch and the places on either side of us appear to be considered to be under water, as in, a lake. At least, they are covered with the same blue as Little Donahoe Creek that runs through all the properties. We're talking two or three hundred acres here, all told, that shows up as a lake. That most emphatically isn't.

Ours is Houston Black. I went to one of my gardening meetups and we went to the Georgetown community garden, and the director said the soil there was also Houston Black.
