Based on APD's incident reports

http://malford.ci.austin.tx.us/polic...e/zip_2008.pdf

The zip codes with the highest (all crimes) indident numbers in town are:

zip code robbery burglary total location
78753 137 686 total incidents 14,186 North I-35 Corridor
78741 241 872 total incidents 14,742 East Riverside Drive
78701 93 128 total incidents 12,790 Downtown Austin CBD <-----------------------------------------
78704 85 605 total incidents 11,357 S. Central Austin to Ben White
78745 72 630 total incidents 10,485 S.Central Austin BenWhite to Ditmar Rd
78702 129 474 total incidents 10,301 East Austin

The zip codes with the most violent crimes are:
zip code murder rape agg-assault location

78741 5 34 239 East Riverside Drive
78753 3 37 208 North I-35 Corridor
78758 3 23 155 N.Central Braker Lane area
78723 2 25 177 N.E.Austin
78702 2 14 170 East Austin
78701 0 22 115 Downtown Austin CBD <-----------------------------------------
78744 0 16 107 S.E. Austin
78704 0 14 105 S.Central to Ben White
78745 1 15 99 S.Central Ben White to Ditmar Rd

Given the low residential population downtown, the Central Business District, zip code 78701, the number of violent crimes is remarkable and can only be attributed to all the bars, nightclubs and music festivals that it hosts.

Again, as long as one is careful and aware, things should be fine.....as remarkable/amazing as the stats you mention indeed are, it can be dealt with, and people must simply keep aware at all times what is going on, and not let their guard down, especially after 1:30AM, as bars start closing and people get more loaded/brazen.......

Some simple late-night tips.....if someone looks suspicious, and is maintaining eye-contact, walk away from them....never walk right past them..cross the street if you have to, especially if you are alone and female.....Do not get involved in conversations with loud/boisterous groups late at night outside of bars either..looks like thats indeed what the couple that was assaulted did........stay away from streets that are empty late at night, and alleys.........and walk faster than you usually do......

But these are just survival skills anyone should use for all most any city in the world. Common sense and paying attention are enough most of the time. If a person feels like they are in constant danger they can go to a Kick Boxing or Krav Maga class to make them feel safer.

True Alan.......haven't heard of Krav Maga...have to check that out.....just that Austin is approaching the size and transiency where people really have to start working with those survival skills a bit more out here....won't take long for people to adapt and get more street smart.....

Krav Maga is the Israeli created martial art. It is made for street and close combat encounter, primarily defending against people attacking you with weapons. It teaches people to disarm other people who have guns/knives and then put then down very quickly. It is not for tournaments and showing off. It is for hurting fools who think that they have the right to hurt other people.

Krav Maga Association Of America, Inc. | Israeli Self Defense

Here are two places that teach it in Austin.

don't you all have concealed firearm laws here? Or how's that work. Go buy a gun.

Also, if you're so afraid of these "new" dangers (seems like those cases you mentioned were from bars and perhaps late at night like 1am) then maybe that illustrates where you like to hang out? Otherwise why would you pay attention to a rise of crime from drunken behavior in a bar district?

The crime rate in Austin is still really very small compared to most large cities. If you look at the numbers I posted above there are many residential areas of Austin that are more dangerous then the CBD. Look at the CBD

0 murders
22 rapes (not quite 2 per month)
115 assaults (not quite 10 per month)

And most of those situations could have probably been avoided if people had behaved prudently.

Look at Dallas for comparison:

District 2 which includes the West End (similar to the warehouse district)
29 murder
? rape not listed seperatly
912 agg assault
2192 simple assault

District 14 which includes the rest of the CBD
4 murder
? rape not listed seperatly
348 agg assault
1330 simple assault
