Bastrop or Wimberley
My husband and I are looking to live in Wimberley or Bastrop. We have been to each and looked at houses. I prefer Bastrop, but my brothers who live in Austin were not happy with my choice. If you know good or bad I would love to hear it. We already know location, we are mainly looking at: crime, education, growth, re sale values, and general opinnions. Thank you.

both can be good places but i believe the impression wimberley gives is one of artistic creativity and laid back, confident lifestyle -- bastrop strikes me as more rural in philosophy

My parents live in bastrop and my sister-in-law lives in wimberley. I prefer Bastrop bc it seems like more of a real town. Wimberley feels slightly more artificial - touristy and more of a retirement community. Just depends on what you are looking for.

Oak, cedar, and rock in Wimberly. Oak, pines, and soil in Bastrop. Wimberley is probably more expensive right now, and will probably maintain value well, Bastrop is cheaper but has the potential for much more appreciation over the long haul (imho).

Bastrop does get a knock for a possibly subpar (compared to other areas) school system. I am not sure, but I think wimberley goes to Dripping Springs ISD? If so, DSISD is a very good school district.

Hard to quarrel with most of what is written above. Wimberly has its own school system - they do not go to Dripping Springs schools. WISD was somewhat famous recently because they refused to send their Chapter 41 (Robin Hood) check to the state.
WISD>Bastrop ISD.
One thing to consider - traveling to/from Bastrop and Austin is getting worse on SH71 every day. It shocks me everytime I go to Houston on 71 and wait to get through Bastrop.

Bastrop high school is pretty bad (rated Unacceptable last year). We had to move to Austin from Bastrop to get away from that high school. But I like everything else about Bastrop in the 9 years we lived there. I do agree the traffic is getting worse and the town is getting bigger and busier as we speak.

I don't think the drive would improve from Wimberly to Austin since Wimberly is further out than Bastrop.

Both the main route from Wimberley and the main route from Bastrop will be improved in the next few years. Of course, both improvements will be toll roads.
