I was in Austin last weekend and noticed a few houses with a type of fence that I really liked. It appears to be a wooden frame with a criss-cross wire mesh. Is there a name for this type of fence?

Its called a 'Bull Wire' fence down here. Not a Barbed-wire, a bull wire. Its advantages are that you can see pretty landscaping through it, and it makes your yard feel larger and more open.

Thanks! After a quick Google image search confirmation, that is indeed what I was looking for.

cheaper to install because you can buy it in sections and it does not have to be nailed up piece by piece like some fences and also does not really require that much maintenance
but some HOA rules won't let you put them in

Did you see them in East Austin? The pioneers put them up around their homes to keep out the natives.

Bull wire fence is not unique to Austin and Central Texas, but you rarely see it elsewhere.

right, that's true, they aren't unique to Austin. However I have never seen them in any other cities personally.. And people visiting from Dallas and Houston have said, "What kind of fence is that??" when they come down/ up/
