Default Recent College Grad From NC

Planning a move to Austin from the triangle area (Raleigh/Durham), North Carolina. I am about a year out of college and just need to get away for a while to meet new people. I will be moving with my GF and I was looking for somewhere downtown or close to downtown, that is safe, and will have plenty of social activities/people in their 20's to meet and hang out with.
Anywhere with music (which I hope is most of downtown) is a plus as I am really big into indie and concerts. I have also worked at a record company before and wouldn't mind doing something in the industry! (any recommendations as to where to look/hassle would be greatly appreciated).
Basically, any thoughts on great social places to live downtown w/ music for a recent college grad and his gf? Was looking at So.Cal but is a bit too far/expensive. My budget is $500-1000 for an Apt. 1 or 2 bedrooms...not a shack.

Thanks!
