Texas beaches are what they are. They are NOT Florida or California or the Atlantic coast. So, don't come looking for something that's not there. Port Aransas has the best beach in close proximity to Austin IMO. It's got sand and waves and shells and you can drive on the beach. It's got good seafood and good fishing too. I lived on the East Coast and in Florida and while it took me awhile to warm up to the Texas coast, I can now appreciate it for what it has to offer and not compared to other beaches.

Three reasons NOT to move to Florida instead of Austin:
- It is even hotter in the summer due to the insane humidity
- The bugs are EVERYWHERE and they are enormous. Austin doesn't even compare as far as bugs go.
- Full of rude, old people from the Northeast. Florida is where everyone goes to die.

(And, as an Aggie I'll have to add a 4th----it's full of Longhorn supporters)

It is close to San Antonio, Hill Country and the center of the best bbq in Texas. Unique book stores and record shops, Love the Fiesta Grocery Store on IH 35, a poor man Whole Foods

Its been a while since I was there, but the beaches and wetlands on Padre Island are beautiful. Great birding. Pretty good birding in Austin, too. Lots of places to see bats (that's good - they eat mosquitoes).

3 good reasons:
I will respect you if you respect me.
We have a culture, a life style and a passion that is stronger than any other state.
I like you. Please come and like my friends, even if you don't like them. They need to learn about you (OK, we're kinda getting warm and fuzzy but this is about the time the beer kicks in).
Simply said by our cajun sweetheart Lucinda Williams: It is all about peace, love and BBQ.
It is such a cool lifestyle.
Padres Island and Port A are cool places. As is Corpus. We are not California. We are so lucky.
PS: In about 15 years before we may lose our lifestyle. You can either step up and enjoy it or go to funkytown and think about it. In between time you can enjoy the music. It is really, really good.
Send me a private message in month if your think we fit your lifestyle. Even if we don't, its a cool place to call home. Bring your check book.

1. Food - The BBQ and Tex-Mex are great but you can find a lot of other great food too
2. Atmosphere - Easy going and friendly people from all walks of life - and they all seem to get along
3. Toss up between nightlife (Warehouse District and 6th Street) and the Town Lake Running Trail - I like both but I use the running trail all the time, but when I do go out it is fun
