Sorry for the confusion. Proeye was not suggesting an ocean should be in Austin, just where is the nearest. It appeared that you missed that. That's all.
Aww. It's all good. I admit I was confused...and that it should read "LookingtoLeave wishes there were a decent ocean nearby." That's one thing I do wish we had.
is it easy to get jobs in austin, and how hot does it get. And does it cool down in the winter, and how is the cost of living there, because I am thinking about relocating there from Memphis.

It depends on what kind of a job and what you mean by easy. My husband looked from out of state and it took him eight months. Lots of layoffs right now in several industries.

I hate to sound discouraging, but there are quite a few lay offs now. Austin has many smaller start-up companies that are downsizing. Don't give up hope though. You never know.
Heck yes it gets hot and for many many months. Last summer was abnormally unbearable but it steady stayed in the lower 100s for awhile. Either way, it gets hot towards May and stays that way till October or even November. Winter, if you can call it that, is way more bearable. You will have 30-40 degree weather, but it doesn't stay that way for long. We have a fall and spring but for all of one month maybe.
I know nothing about the cost of living relative to Memphis, but I find Austin pretty affordable. You can get a house anywhere from the 150s to $4-5m or higher. It all depends on the area of course, but if you're looking for an older, affordable home, you can find them here.
1) The weather (sure it's hot like woah for 4 months out of the year), but October-May is a dream
2) Friendly, laid-back, out-going people. I made lifelong friends in just 2 short years of living there.
3) SO much outdoor things to do as a family.
Why I Don't Miss Austin:
1) Everything is super spread out, so there's a lot of driving going on
2) The city itself is somewhat boring. I was told many times if I wanted to get my "big-city" fix to drive to Dallas
3) How employers justify paying less because "Austin's cost of living is lower" -- but it really isn't
1. It's comfortable. Things are reasonably priced (the job wages still aren't ) and it won't cost much to feel cozy here. I may not be totally sold on Austin's 'friendliness,' but I'll say that people there are indeed accepting and tolerant. The 'live and let live' vibe is very true.
2. Everything you need is in Austin. Austin has all the shopping you'll ever need. There really isn't a reason to leave the city unless you get bored and either need to get your 'big city' fix, or need time to be out in the country.
3. It's pretty. Austin is a clean and very well kept city, especially for its size. The hilly roads are a refreshing change to some of the roads found in other Texas cities.
Alamo drafthouse movie theater..though I miss the original on Congress big time....
West Riverside....most every eatery, from Shady Grove to Green Mesquite........
Continental Club.......I know, lame, but I do love it, and miss Barfield's weekly appearances.....
1. Annual festivals (Art City Austin, Art Outside, SXSW, ACL, Pecan Street Festival, etc etc etc)
2. People like coming out of their house for community events (Artist's Market, Eeyore's Birthday and Blues on the Green in the summer, for instance)
3. Outdoors activities (Zilker Park, Barton Creek Greenbelt, Hill Country cycling, Hamilton Pool, lots lots more)
I need to contact people from Panhandle Texas.....Any help?
I´m from argentina and I,ve been in Austin in 1983...I think is a beatifull city. By the way, in the library of the University park I think ,there is a statue of Sarmiento, considered the father of letters in Argentina. Hugs. Javier
I nominate that for the most random reply on this forum of all time.
