Was going to say... best he avoid any big city not in the South. In most big cities, sarcasm is normal discourse... at *worst* it's considered gentle ribbing. And if you aren't quick enough to catch on, you'll be considered the village idiot.

Austin isn't a big city. It's a big country town imo.
NYC is awesome....and you expect the attitude there

I don't think we can ever get back to where we were.
I also think that many people come here looking for this elusive weirdness as though they are going to find it under a rock, kinda like looking for gold at the end of the rainbow. Many people who post on here talk about moving/living in Austin but really don't. They end up living in RR, Georgetown, hill country, or some other place that's close to Austin so they can work. Then, they can visit Austin to point and laugh at the "neo-weirdos" instead of becoming one themselves. I think TexasLady indicated earlier that people in Austin were the party. Now, people
here to be entertained like its just a show that they watch instead of being an active participant in the great party of life.
On a side bar, I don't know anything about flippant attitudes either. I mean I've lived here my whole life. But, I do know about the sarcasm and yes, most of that is an inside joke/understanding between those of us who were raised here.

You may be underestimating some of us out here in the suburbs. We do all kinds of crazy things, we just don't want a huge audience while we do them. And where else but out on acreage can you have really loud parties with live bands and not have the volume control police come out and shut you down?

I can't rank weirdness in Austin because I'm not there yet but I can give you a report in June, (when we'll be there). BUT, I do want to say: I'm personally weird. I'm sarcastic at times but not doing it to fit into some kind of social way of relating...I'm just sarcastically rude at times because I don't think before I speak. I'm at the stage in my life where I don't even care if people like me or not. (and actually it's the most freedom I've had in some time)
The other thing is we were going to move nearer the city but the cost was a factor, that and I didn't know how to search for a home I suppose. I don't think I'm going to be happy where we live, I think I'll probably be miserable because it might not be where we should be. (the goal was to just GET there) Lastly, I would NEVER go to Austin and call someone weird. To think that people are actually going to Austin and viewing it as some kind of freak show is sick. But hey, that's just my unsocialized, sarcastic opinion.
Personally, I'm not looking for nirvana in or around Texas, I don't even want to move there. And I'm not friendly and I hope you don't like me so I won't have to be nice to you. And I won't say we're moving to Austin because we're not...we wound up in a town outside of Austin. Oh well.
I have to ask: do coyotes really eat dogs and cats?

I never said Austin was a big city... just warning you that if you think you see sarcasm from the people in Austin, you'd better steer clear of any big city not in South. In those cities, it's much more the norm rather than the exception, and doesn't convey rudeness or lack of respect.

yes, coyotes really do eat cats and small dogs. When we lived in Denver you weren't allowed to leave your pets outside unsupervised. No outside cats at all unless you didn't care what happened to them. The coyote problem isn't quite that bad on this side of town but it probably is in other areas more in the hill country. We could hear coyotes until about 2 yrs ago, but haven't heard any yips or howls in that 2 yrs. up to now.

Oh thanks lovesroses...I missed the coyote one. I'll have to add that to my list of fears: tornadoes, spiders, scorpions, snakes, roaches, fire ants now coyotes. Just great...
And let's not forget all the bats. Yes, that was something I didn't know either. Bats.
I have got to get some sleep...

You're right about that. Great parties on the outside of Austin with good music, people, and drink/food, mmmmmm.
I remember parties like that in Austin too. Years ago people were more accepting of parties on the block with music. Often, the neighbors would come check out what was going on and partake in the festivities. Today, they would call the cops and cry to the city council about too much noise! "Turn it Down, that Noisy Music!"
You know what they say, "If it's too Loud, you're too Old."

So, it is still a bad habit and a major turn off.
If I go to Wendy's and the dude at the front is all sarcastic and flippant with me I'm not going to return there.
