I read online that a child must be 5 years old by Sept. 1 in order to begin kindergarten in the Austin school district.

Does anyone know if that is a hard & fast rule? Our son's birthday is 9/16 and I would hate to see him hate to wait out another year (if/when we move to Austin) before starting school just because he's a mid-sept baby.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks.

I believe this is true and I believe it's a pretty hard and fast rule. In fact, one of our clients, whose child was already in kindergarten in Arizona, moved here 2 months ago and the school district would not admit the child because of the age requirement. so now the child is out of school even though she had already spent 7 months in an AZ kindergarten and will have to wait until next year now. Parents were frustrated, to say the least.

I believe this was RR ISD...and it could be that particular school, but I'd guess that they stick to that pretty hard and fast, otherwise, it would be hard to make exceptions and figure out where to draw the line.

gigi is right... the rule is held tight to five years old before September 1st. In Ohio it was August 1st. There has to be a cut off date of some sort or the exceptions would just keep pushing the date back and back.

Yes, I work for the TX school system, and it is true. My son has a friend that turned 5 on September 2 but had to wait until the following year to start Kindergarten. This was 25 years ago, and it hasn't changed.

In CA it used to be December 1 and might still be, so I got to start school when I was 4 turning 5 in November.

This is true. The only way you can get around it is to put your child in private school. You would need to leave them there for about 3 years, otherwise they will make them repeat a grade.

Honestly, there is no rush in your child growing up. You will regret it as they get older. All kids get into things at about the same grade. You would just be speeding up that process.

Look on the bright side. He'll be one of the oldest in his class in high school, and probably more physically mature. That's good for sports and that's what matters at TX high schools.

My Daughter With A 9/20 Birthday, I Feel, Has Been At An Advantage Being One Of The Older Kids In Class - She's Now In 4th Grade. At Age 5 (or So) 11 Months Can Make A Big Difference

My middle son has a September 10th birthday, so yup - he turns 5 this upcoming Sept and is jonesing for kindergarten so he can be like his big brother and be in the "big kids" school, but he'll have another year of preschool!

I actually think it's a good thing for him - he is on the immature/young side, so I'm happy to give him another year before kindergarten.
