We had many people recommend Strand Brothers when we were looking to get a heat pump replaced. We went with them but were very disappointed with the experience.

They caused some expensive damage during the install. They didn't deny responsibility, but dragged the heels for weeks and tried a 'cheap fix' which ended up just causing more damage. We were also not impressed by how we were treated after the damage occurred either. It wasn't until I started getting my lawyer involved and wrote a formal letter that we were taken seriously.

Later there were two problems with the install that had to be fixed with service calls. One of which should have been tested during the install.

I know they were acquired by a national firm, Service Experts. Perhaps that has affected their customer service. We had recommendations from many happy customers, but maybe they never had anything go wrong. The key to customer service is how you treat customers when things don't go right, and for us Strand Bros. failed.

Default new a/c systems

I highly recommend Wansley Refrigeration Service, 512-453-7361, a family business at 4111 Guadalupe Street that has been in Austin for about 4 decades. They do not advertise because they are well known in "old" central Austin, like W.O. Harper Plumbing. In 2006, they installed an American Standard heat pump in my house. Before the installation, Sandy Smith came out and measured the size of the house and did a load calcualation to determine the appropriate tonnage needed. Afterwards, he sent a written quote with all the specs and options. There was never any pressure to pick a certain model and all of the staff was very easy to work with and always took the time to fully explain all information. Last year they came out to do the seasonal maintenance on both of our units (old 2 ton & new 3.5 ton). The old unit will probably need to be replaced in a couple of years as it is 12 years old, and I'll definitely call Sandy back. Even though both original units (Janitrol/Goodman) were installed at the same time, the 3.5 ton had constant problems. Do Not buy Janitrol/Goodman.

Good Luck.
