No, legend has it a circus train was coming through town and they stopped and were watering and exercizing the animals and a Hippo escaped and ran into brushy creek and wouldn't come out. I think there's an alternate story but don't remember what it was.

From reading the legend (which doesn't fit in which what I remember from the late 1960's/early 1970's about the name, but hey, it's not my mascot! ), this would have been in 1915 that the hippo escaped, so that would be one OLD hippo!

I attended my friend's wedding on Sunday and the whole gang had our picture taken at ol' Henrietta Hippo (their family tradition)!
