Like I said, pretty much the same stores that you can throw a rock anywhere in Central Texas (including Hutto) and hit. Or have within a ten to fifteen minute drive in any given direction.

These houses are by Gehan, and they are walking distance from the shops in SouthPark. I have read threads where residents of Dripping Springs and Hutto get all wound up because a target was built 5 miles from them, then they blow off places like SouthPark Meadows.
what gives?

It's a trade off for rural living. Not a good, or a bad thing, it depends what you are looking for. If you want a cheap house or a ranch, that's the condition. I understand not everyone wants to live in Austin, and it's unfair to project desires onto others with different needs and realities. If you are looking for a rural farming town close enough to visit Austin, but far enough away to be out of the city, the Hutto is your place. It's a wise choice for some.

I'm guessing the neighborhood in question here is a good neighborhood and maybe we would have bought there. I don't know. I'm not going to get into all the logistics of our move and why we did the things we did. It's really none of anyones business. My thought is if we don't like it we'll move. When I do get there I'm going to check out that area mentioned to see for myself. Actually, we were able to purchase less that it would cost to rent for the same house...so there you go. People keep saying the homes in Hutto are cheap. For God's sake already...would you all either put up or shut up? Would you at least have the common courtesy to show some proof? That's all for me on this subject. I have too much to do to be on here reading things that just **** me off. It isn't worth it. And, from my perspective Hutto looks like the Mayberry I wanted. So shove it all you Hutto haters, crawl back into your lair and stay there.

I LOVE HUTTO!!! It's true, it's just beginning. But that's the beauty. There are many parklands approved and trails, etc.
I live in the Riverwalk subdivision by DR Horton, and the homes there are from $150-190K new, but I currently lease a 2006 2300+ sqft home 4bd/2.5 bath for $1195 and it sells for around $160K. I also like the Park at Brushy Creek which is by Main Street Homes just a block to my South (in the same general neighborhood) off 685. Those sell from $90-$150K and are just a tad smaller. Still a great option. I'd say take a drive out here, there's a lot of growth, and a very small town feel. I like the vibe, personally.
I love the fact that everyone in my neighborhood is living AT THEIR MEANS and not far above.
One neighbor parks his paid-for Porsche in the garage the other a Corvette, never to be seen/shown off... They drive their beat-ups on a daily basis, because they just don't care what people think! And with the price of homes, and a good mortgage making bi-monthly payments, it's very possible to pay off one of these homes in 15 years and ensure a more recession-proof and debt free way of life. Awesome and frankly unheard of to this former California girl!
Many of us commute 130 to downtown every day (21 mi. door to door) and it takes me no more than 30 mins. ea/way. I like having my daily dose of the "city" as well. It's all about balance for me. With kids, I don't miss the city at all on the weekends! I rather like the picturesque fields and cows that surround Hutto.
As far as the ghetto comment... I think this is largely due to an underlying sentiment towards certain ethnic groups and preference to live in a homogenous neighborhood rather than a diverse one. I love the fact that we're diverse, and especially since my husband and daughter were born abroad (I met my husband while living in Mexico for almost 6 years).
Finally, in defense of HISD... And this is truly from experience in my searching for the best neighborhood for my kids: In the price range that the OP mentioned (which, by the way, is also mine), you're not getting the best schools in Round Rock, Cedar Park, etc. You'd be ending up in those areas' "ghettos" (a joke in my opinion-nothing like Compton, for example). But they are older areas/homes with less community amenities, which I didn't want. I'd rate my daughter's Middle School (Farley) as average so far, and I'm keeping my finger on the pulse very closely! I'm becoming active in the PTS and plan to voice my opinions and support our new school to grow.
I live just on the Southernmost border of Hutto, at the Gattis School Exit off 130. It's closer for me to shop the HEB on Gattis School than the Walmart or HEBPlus on 79. I'm also really close to the Stone Hill Town Center in Pflugerville for shopping at SuperTarget as well. It's located on Kelly Rd. at 130 & 45. Stone Hill Town Center • Pflugerville
As I said before, I'm still renting until next spring. But am leaning toward buying right in my own neighborhood next year. But I will look in my immediate vicinity for other options. I have been interested, and you may also want to consider, getting to know the Northeast Pflugerville subdivisions of Falcon Pointe, Villages at Hidden Lake, Avalon Village, and The Reserve at Westcreek. Very conveniently located, with lots of amenities, and similar small community feel.

Welcome.

You know what's hysterical? When I was living in Austin, in the middle of town (five minutes from downtown), if I wanted to go to someplace like South Park Meadows (which didn't exist then, it had only recently been cow pasture and was one of the places I went to concerts and festivals), I had to drive, guess what? Ten to fifteen minutes! There WAS a shopping center walking distance from my house (several, actually, of varying sizes, one of which had an entire section of unusual stores, all very "Austintatious" in nature and not found anywhere else), but if I wanted someplace that had everything all in one place, that's what the drive was. And I was VERY conveniently located! Now, living on my 55 acres in the country, it's a 20 minute drive to a shopping center that has all of that. That's how far I drove my kid to school every day (private school) when I lived in the city.
Interesting the conceptions and misconceptions that are out there.

I remember when SouthPark Meadows was a concert venue. I saw Phish and DMB there. If you go on Google maps, the concrete pad and stage are still there on satellite view. I miss it, but glad they kept the Grove and play live music on weekends - trying to keep true to the roots as best they can.

To me ghetto is just slang for obvious drug activity and things in that manner, should of known better then to get involved on this topic, BUT once again just trying to help those in need of finding a place to call home, I sure would want to know.
But that is why I rented first and so glad I did, because the place we rented in RR was not very kid friendly, I am looking out for my children, safety first in my opinion. I like to sleep peacefully at night, paying a extra 10,000, is nothing to me to be able to do that!
The world is crazy now and to find a safe place is 1st on my list!!

I'm just having difficulty with Hutto being a mecca for drug activity. I cannot help but think people are joking when they say it or perhaps I am that ignorant. If anyone could show me some proof I'd gladly change my way of looking at it. My peeve is if there is factual information regarding an area of Hutto I too would want to know. But blanket statements like Hutto has ghetto areas just don't cut it for me. Personally I don't think there is such a thing as a safe area. It's an illusion.
